Probe Expands To Cover All VW Diesels: Porsche And Audi May Be Sucked Into Vortex
Over the weekend it was revealed that Volkswagen went out of its way to hide the dirtiness of its cars, specifically models 2009 and newer equipped with 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel engines. That’s almost 500,000 cars facing a pollution-related recall and that number could grow according to The Detroit News. The EPA is now going to look at the company’s diesel 3.0-liter V6.

This is bad news because those engines sit in numerous Audis and the Porsche Cayenne. Said Audis are the Q5, A6, A7 and A8. Welcome to the party.

I'm an Audi Q5 3.0 liter diesel driver (May 2015 deliver), and it sucks royally to learn that my vehicle could be affected. As much as I dislike this scandal, I hope is becomes a Good Thing(TM), in that it could inspire VAG (VW Audi Group) to a dose of humility and to increase their customer focus. They'll sure need to do something big to attract customers to the brand, now that consumer confidence has been so badly shaken.

Unlikely to effect any diesel using a urea exhaust system so you should be OK. The issue is around VW's 3 versions of 4 cylinder diesels. The ones without urea spewed out large amounts of NOx over the limit. Some recent 4 cyl. VW versions are equipped urea but apparently are still slightly above EPA limits. Sources are indicating VW has three options to fix the illegal cars:
1. Take out the software and run the cars at lower fuel flow rates which reduces NOx causing heat but causing higher fuel usage and less torque. Pissed off owners.
2. Install urea system in the vehicle. Costs VW $5K+ per vehicle.
3. Buy the car back and scrap it!

The other n=manufactures were wondering how VW met the EPA standard w/o urea. Now we know the couldn't.

Seemingly, this is what it will take to slow down Audi's sales and global growth...

This is a huge stumbling block and will greatly affect future business of VW, Audi & porsche. So much for the "truth in Engineering" for Audi. It is very unfortunate for the brands involved

Anime, a few years ago when Toyota & Lexus recalled 10.7 million cars in the US, where was the truth in engineering for them?

There is no Japanese Engineering - they are good at copying stuff - but often remain years behind (THe Lexus LS is an example).

While this may greatly reduce the sales of Diesel Cars in the USA - remember that in Europe - the difference in the cost of Gas and Diesel makes gasoline cars NOT an alternative - even hybrids. And most of the diesels in Europe that are produced for cars today have the UREA exhaust system - so they probably come close or actually meet the emissions requirements. So - this will not end diesels anywhere else but the USA.
