Hyundai Recalls 470,000 Sonatas For Engine Connecting Rod Failures
Hyundai is recalling nearly a half-million midsize cars in the U.S. to replace key engine parts because a manufacturing problem could cause them to fail.

The recall covers 470,000 Sonata sedans from the 2011 and 2012 model years equipped with 2-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline engines. At the time, the Sonata was Hyundai’s top-selling vehicle in the U.S.

The company also is recalling nearly 100,000 Accent small cars because the brake lights can fail.

In documents on the Sonata recall posted Friday by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Hyundai says that metal debris may not have been fully removed from the crankshaft area during manufacturing at Hyundai’s Alabama engine plant. That can restrict oil flow to the connecting rod bearings, and since they are cooled by oil, they could fail. If that happens, the engines could stall and cause a crash.

A precautionary recall is what this is. This does not mean ALL the cars will have engine failure. That is the case of most recalls.

Likely they will minimize the engine replacement action and rely more on the extended warranty. Trouble is the 120k or ten years warranty extension is about the normal half life of quality vehicles today.

Hyundai/bmw/audi/vw....if it wasn't for their nice lease and 100k warranty....who would buy these car brands. You can add GM to that also. Waiting for NHTSA to have FORD do a recall...for issues w/ aluminum and steel frames. These two don't play well.

That not so cheap Hyundai does not look like such a good bet any longer.
Replacement con rods is now a quick fix and low tech mechanics at dealers will probably not do a proper job under the load of so many defective Hyundais.

Does this include the similar Kia Optima engines?
