Diesel's Were A Hard Enough Sell In The USA. Has VW Put The Final Nail In The Coffin For Its Success Here?

Diesel's Were A Hard Enough Sell In The USA. Has VW Put The Final Nail In The Coffin For Its Success Here?
After a less than stellar reputation 30 years ago in the USA, diesel cars have been faced with an almost insurmountable challenge for re-ignited sales in this country.

And after testing and owning most of the new diesel's it would be hard not to be impressed with their capabilities.

But no matter HOW good they were, even BEFORE this VW fiasco, the cars themselves just weren't selling in any impressive volume.

The trucks have been faring a LITTLE better, but they are still not winning any sales competitions.

Talk to dealers in private and they'll tell you the cars are virtually unsaleable. This was BEFORE the scandal!

Good news for the faithful though, especially on the used market. Hell, you can buy the best diesel in our opinion (BMW 335d) for UNDER $15k on eBay!

This all comes as good news to those in the gov't as you and I know they NEVER wanted diesel to make a comeback in the USA.

Some would even say they rigged gas prices to take away the math mileage advantage.

And now VW pulls the bonehead car move of this new century with 'DieselGate'.

So our question tonight is now that the diesel car market has been hanging on a string at best, is it finally over for good in the USA?

Will the VW situation destroy ALL companies diesel cars sales in the USA for good, never to make a comeback?

And if so, are you happy or sad about it?

Spies, discuss...

Can you explain it to me how Japan is actually the best country in the world again?

"More Japanese school pupils commit suicide on September 1 each year than on any other date, according to figures collated by Japan's suicide prevention office over a period of more than 40 years.

The grim spike in the statistics is linked to the typical start date of the new school term after the summer holiday has ended.

"The long break from school enables you to stay at home, so it's heaven for those who are bullied," Nanae said. "When summer ends, you have to go back. And once you start worrying about getting bullied, committing suicide might be possible.""

"Nanae thinks the Japanese education system's focus on collective thinking is at the root cause of the problem."

" "As a defeated nation we only teach the history forced on us by the victors," he says. "To be an independent nation again we must move away from the history imposed on us. We should take back our true history that we can be proud of."

In this "true" history of the 20th Century that Mr Tamogami talks of, Japan was not the aggressor, but the liberator. Japanese soldiers fought valiantly to expel the hated white imperialists who had subjugated Asian peoples for 200 years.

It is a proud history, where Japan, alone in Asia, was capable of taking on and defeating the European oppressors. It is also a version of history that has no room for the Japanese committing atrocities against fellow Asians.

Mr Tamogami believes that Japan did not invade the Korean Peninsula, but rather "invested in Korea and also in Taiwan and Manchuria"."

The president of the Japanese Olympic Committee further attempted to assuage fears by saying the radiation level in Tokyo was “the same” as in other major global capitals such as London, New York and Paris.

As you can see all those sources I have given you, Japan is in a FAR BIGGER trouble than Germany does.

VW's problem costs around 18 billion + 7 billion dollars of repair costs. That's not something VW can not handle right now. The only problem will be VW's diesel reputation and not other brands. Also, VW's new CEO is now the Porsche guy, and he said he will make VW even better.

On the other hand....... Japan... well.

First. Japan was never known to be the country with human rights. Japan is racist against the people of Fukushima and Okinawa as well even though they are the same Japanese.

Second. Japan's radiation problem might make the Tokyo Olympics impossible because Japan's radiation problem is slowly becoming visible to the public, and the Japanese government is unable to hide this any longer. Germans and the French criticized Japan for even trying to do the Olympics in the land of radiation.

Third. Japanese culture is filled with childish, low-level garbage that most people are not really interested in. No wonder Japanese cars are boring, soulless and there is not a single rich person who only drives Japanese cars, when there are tons of people in the world who only drive German, American, British or Italian.

Lastly, Japan is the country of greed and selfishness.

And also Japan is pretty foolish, as they keep wanting to keep their nuclear plants, when their radiation is turning their country into hell.

And honestly, once the world knows about Tokyo radiation through Tokyo Olympics 2020 bubble, the damage that Japan will suffer will be nothing like VW scandal. It could seriously tarnish the ENTIRE image of the Japanese industries.

So really, it's funny how people are thinking VW scandal is a big deal. It won't be, in just one year.

Seriously, does anyone really think VW scandal will destroy VW? When Toyota and GM both survived the cases that are far worse than VW issue?

Also, there is also possibility that the Tokyo Olympics 2020 may not even happen at all and if it doesn't, then this will mean that Tokyo has been proven to be the city of radiation and once something like that happens? You do NOT recover from something like that, when VW scandal actually is recoverable. Because as for VW, all they need to do is to restructure and reorganize.

As for Japan? Being known as the country of radiation means the end.

Do you think people would buy, radioactive wastes aka Japanese products (Including automobiles) once Japan becomes known as the country of radiation? Did you know Russia has been shipping back hundred and hundreds of Japanese cars as high level of radiation was detected from them?

"130 ‘radioactive’ Japanese cars banned from entering Russia

The Fukushima nuclear plant was hit by an earthquake and a tsunami in March 2011, which resulted in the world’s biggest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

Leakage of radiation-contaminated water has been the major threat to population and environment of Japan and neighboring states from the very beginning of the crisis at the facility, situated just 250 kilometers from Japan’s capital city, Tokyo.

However, the plant’s operator, TEPCO, did not acknowledge that contaminated water was escaping from the Fukushima plant into the ocean, and that it was unable to stop the leaks, until July 2013"

So let me ask you. Who is most likely done for? Volkswagen's diesel system? Or Japan itself?

Sorry GMCadillac- but the GM and Toyota Problems were miniscule compared to the VW problem. THe ignition switches were a $2 item cost of repairs were small and easy to accomplish - and in neither case was real fraud ever proven. VW - on the other hand - deliberately defrauded their customers - there had to be a lot of people who knew - and the cost will be hard to quantify - depending on what they actually do to "correct" the problem. Remember - a software fix will correct the emission problem - but reduce the cars performance and fuel efficiency - so that is NOT a complete fix as far as the customer is concerned. So VW will have to offer reimbursements for the fuel mileage - which could be thousands per car. And that is so far only in the USA - but we now know that Canada and Europe were also involved - and each country will fine VW.

Something that has NOT entered the discussion here is fuel mileage -VW used the diesel small cars to offset less efficient higher end cars to meet standards and likely will now have to buy credits to cover the loss in mileage as well - another expense.

In addition - the law suits will be epic - as dealers will also be in the mix as well as customers and countries and states- because the extra emissions are a negative for everyone who breathes. So - every person in the USA could be part of a class action suit. And remember - they have already admitted the fraud - so it is just a matter of determining cost.

I will bet that VW will have to declare bankrupcy at some point to end the endless lawsuits. With their stock tanking - it won't be hard to do -since the amount of debt they carry will soon be close to their market capitalization. But doing so to avoid paying - something Neither Toyota or GM actually did - will also affect their sales. VW may survive - but it will be quite a different company - likely with less of their brands as well.

Hahaha I'm sorry, TomM, you practically know nothing. I can't believe you ACTUALLY think this will bring down VW to the point that they need to even declare bankruptcy just for a single scandal.

I'm sorry, Toyota and GM did NOT honor millions of people who were supposed to be, as countries like Canada still see NO COMPENSATION MONEY from GM.

And the media is only talking about the fate of diesel, not Volkswagen. You are the only idiot who is talking about the fate of Volkswagen.

And guess what, Chrysler and GM cars have many reports of badly engineered vehicles and yet, did Chrysler and GM EVER DO ANYTHING about ALL OF THOSE CASES? No.

Conclusion: TomM, you are just a dumb idiot who is jealous of the brands that VW possesses, and unfortunately, I have a feeling that you actually think the cars that can kill people is less of a problem than the cars that kill no one.

For a person who claims to never insult anyone - YOU sure do not know what an insult is --based on your post. I did not say they would not survive the problem - what I did say is that they would have to go through Bankruptcy reorganization in order to end the endless lawsuits that will come. And if you believe that Diesel will go away - then you have not been to Europe - where diesels are a large seller. So I will not fault you for your obvious lack of information.

yes - when People die - it matters - but the cost of the situation will be far beyond what GM went through - and cost FAR more. More important - we do not know how the ignition switch was involved in those deaths - only that it was simpler for GM (As it is for most big companies) to settle the issues out of court. But then - you also do not understand the cost of being a big business either. And - we still do not actually know the full extent of the cars involved - only what VW claims to be.

As long as gas is cheap - the EV and Hybrid market will not expand unless it is forced upon the people - a gas engine still has advantages over any of those things. A range of 200 miles is fine for the average person - but for certain people - and in some areas of the country - they will not be an option. How do you recharge a EV when you are in the outback of a state park and no electricity is available. And I do drive a Hybrid for work - and while it is fine for that purpose - I would not if I had the choice. So far - the Hybrids tend to use up the trunk space for the batteries - leaving no spare tire - and no space for my luggage and equipment.

After you graduate 2nd grade we will confer again - I do not like taking advantage of children.

You insulted first, kid, so the same logic does not apply to you, moron. Don't even think you would not be when you are the one who starts something stupid.

Oh yes, I'm sure Toyota and GM had to go through BANKRUPTCY reorganization to get out of their mess. The lawsuits practically happen to all the companies with big scandals, and yet, how did they actually manage to survive all those cases without having to declare bankruptcy?

And another thing. It is already stated that VW is about to pay up around 7 billion dollars and it doesn't seem like they will pay up more than this. And bankruptcy?

And the most laughable part: You, are the only person talking about the whole bankruptcy stuff for VW, when the main concern is about diesel. And I already know a lot of people in Europe drive diesel vehicles, but unfortunately, that alone doesn't just say VW will be facing bankruptcy at this point. The only thing you are showing is your imagination.

So oh, I'm sorry, I don't know much about business? I only do not believe in your "fairy tale" that came out of your ass, my friend. Unless there is some kind of a believable source, don't even act like you know something, genius.

Now - back to the subject - Will Diesel survive?

There was always a small loyal following for diesel engines in the USA =- at one time Mercedes sent out or gave out a booklet listing the stations that supplied diesel fuel to cars. They will understand that the cars the use the Urea additive do meet the emission standards - and still give reasonable performance - and they will still buy diesel. Small Truck owners - where the diesel advantage is higher - will also still buy them too. Obviously - smart people will understand that it will be unlikely that ANY manufacturer of diesels will have to meet the emissions requirements because they will be watched far more closely - so this may actually be a good time to buy a diesel - because they will be harder to sell - and likely not hold their prices as well as before.

And in Europe - where Diesel is the only affordable car fuel for most people - they will continue to thrive

Tom M I think you are bit misplaced when you call the ignition switch problem miniscule. What makes GM's ignition switch problem "NOT" miniscule is that 120 people died as a result! Further it has been understood that certain GM engineers and managers knew about this problem and hid it for years! When people die it's not miniscule!!
As for VW, of course they will survive this problem. However they have permanently damaged not only their reputation further in the US but have now damaged the reputation of diesel fuel engines from any car maker trying to sell diesel cars here. I don't think diesel will recover when there are hybrids and full electric car technology with batteries that will soon last 300 plus miles before a recharge and only take 15 minutes or less to recharge 80%. That in itself completely changes the equation of usability. Until VW really develops low cost hybrid and full EV technology for the US(They have just started with the Jetta Hybrid), they will continue to lag in sales in this one area. Their other problem is lack of proper product. However I think most US customers may be further turned off by VW USA because not only are their cars complicated, and somewhat unreliable but now there is a trust issue. The only thing in VW's favor is that how ever bad their decision making was in pursuing the path of cheating,it never killed anyone.GM owns that one.

TomM is just an idiot who practically knows nothing about the automotive industry.

This idiot actually thinks GM and Toyota both actually compensated every owner of the car out there. And actually thinks this will bring down the company that is heavily supported by the state government, ultra rich family, etc to the level of bankruptcy. What an idiot.

TomMTomM - 9/27/2015 8:47:17 PM
+1 Boost
Sorry - I did not say that GM or Toyota compensated owners - it simply is not there - However - when FORD admitted that their Hybrids did not get the mileage they originally claimed - they lowered the estimates and did compensate the owners. VW - if they choose a software fix - will reduce the fuel mileage of those cars involved - who will sue to be compensated if they are not compensated automatically. ANd I did not say that VW was not heavily supported - I said the endless lawsuits would require them to declare Bankruptcy reorganization in order to end them - also as I said above. Remember - these cars spewed emissions far above normal levels into the atmosphere - and you will get lawsuits from those GREEN organizations at least - but conceivably - every US citizen would have a claim because ALL of them were affected by the emissions. And THAT is the major difference between the GM debacle and the VW - the number of different possible lawsuits - from State and National - and owners - and dealers - far exceed the ones that will be allowed to go on against the New GM - and they cannot sue the new GM for actions of the OLD GM.

Obviously - it would be better if YOU already had learned to read - but a 2nd grader has limited language skills to read and understand things. AND because I understand your limitation - I would not insult you - you are simply responding on the level you are at!
