While the backlash from Volkswagen's transgressions still remains strong, it seems that at least some people are having fun with it. This is good, at least for us.

Why?

Well, the reality is that while it is a difficult situation TDI owners that want to eventually sell their autos in the future — it has yet to be determined how this situation will impact resale values — we do like to have some fun around here. And if you're aware of the comedy website Funny or Die, you better believe they like to have some laughs.

So it's no surprise that the writers created this little bit of basic chicks breaking up with their Volkswagen Jettas. For those of you who are not familiar with the phrase "basic" it can be applied to any girl/woman that is into certain things. To be more specific, Uggs, pumpkin spice lattes, etc.

Watch and learn, Spies.

At least it accurately captures the vapidness of VW owners.

I think that is going too far. Just as Mercedes in the earlier years (70's) had a small and loyal following when their cars - while well made - were not particularly luxurious - and their diesels were slugs - VW has retained a loyal following of people - some former beetle owners. And these people are likely to be highly educated and above average earners too. Saab and Volvo had similar followings.

While the original Beetle sold in large numbers - that never really transferred over to any subsequent cars - but they were still well made and very conservative looking vehicles. THese people used their cars for transportation - and for example when they bought a Volvo - they bought safety - not flash. And at least for a while - these cars were reliable. Sometimes you would see commercials where an owner raked up 300-400,000 miles in one. Today - if you believe the commercials - a car is no good if it cannot execute a controlled 180 degree skid and run within inches of the announcer standing among the cars running around him (Yes - I know that is not real).
