AUTO SPIES EXCLUSIVE COVERAGE: The re-freshed BMW X3-Approaching perfection?
As a car lover, what better place could you go on your first ever trip to Europe but Germany, the epicenter of automotive excellence?

I was fortunate enough to finally get there this week after many close calls of going there in the past.

The things you notice immediately when you get to the airport in Munich is that the Germans are not just car engineering fanatics.

They're engineering fanatics of every single they make, all the way down to making the 'ultimate flushing machines'!

The other thing that hits you the minute you get off the plane is that the airport in Munich is spotless (you could eat off the floor)and the wonderful use of typefaces and organization of signs, make the transition to traveling in a foreign country an extremely comfortable and stress less experience.

Everyone is really friendly and almost EVERYONE speaks fluent English.

At least all the people I ran into.

We had the opportunity the night before we drove the new X3 to experience a true German homestyle dinner (one of the best I've ever had...see pics), with the head of all BMW powertrains, in an old fashioned beer garden/cozy inn.

And the beer wasn't bad either!!!! ;)

The next morning it was all business went we went to drive the vehicles and the BMW press drive experience is nothing short of flawless.

Talk about an exercise in perfect organization and planning!

But the icing on the cake was the improvements and drive of the newly re-freshed BMW X3.

We have to admit we were not impressed with the first version of the X3.

*We thought it was uglier than a man wearing Birkenstock sandals.

We weren’t impressed with the design but we’ve never had a problem with the way it drove.

All BMW's drive well.

That's a given.

But the exterior design and interior quality was not up to BMW standards in our opinion.

But we really warmed up to the latest iteration (We drove European versions).

The new monochromatic exterior styling is a thousand time better than when it first came out of the gates.

And they have really improved the interior quality.

It's not Lexus quality, but a BMW should NEVER be a Lexus.

It should always be a driver and lean sport, not luxury.

But where the X3 shines and really smokes everything else in its category, is when you hit the gas.

Power and performance is greatly improved.

I had the X3 up to 225 kilometers (about 140mph)and there was absolutely ZERO drama. The SUV was in total control of itself. Don't try that on the new Acura RDX, unless of course you like to tempt fate.

Driving position was perfect and the BMW steering wheels should be the de facto standard on every car and truck (We like them extra thick).

Seats were very comfortable and all the controls are in the right place.

When you drive it your initial impression might be that the suspension is a little stiff but that’s the way it’s designed. You are supposed to feel more at slow speeds so it can perform well off-road and let us tell you the new X3’s awd performance off-road is more than 95% of the world will ever need.

Once the new X3 is up to normal speed (30+) the suspension totally changes and as is smooth as virtually anything out there that has excellent handling.

Are there SUV’s out there that driver softer?

Of course, but they drive sloppier than a five year old Mistubishi Galant.

We were also fortunate to get to drive it while the weather was good AND get hit with a freak huge thunderstorm, so we experienced both good weather and bad weather driving capabilities.

A good test is driving through a huge puddle at speed and seeing how a vehicle reacts.

The new X3 performed extremely well in the pouring rain and never lost its composure.

All in all, BMW has continued to make improvements to the X3 and the latest model is night and day better than the original article.

If you’ve past on this vehicle before, we suggest re-acquainting yourself with it.

If we walked into a BMW looking for a 325 or 328 sedan, we would probably end up driving out in the new X3.

It’s much larger, has better utility, comes with a standard panoramic roof and you can usually lease one for virtually the same price as the 325/328’s.

2007 BMW X3:

The good: Exterior and interior has extensive design improvements. Great power from new engine. Nice utility in a package that could be the perfect size for most drivers. Drives like a BMW. M appearance package now available.

The bad: Exterior design needs Swiss army knife utility look and a touch more testosterone and muscularity.

The ugly: Because of its exterior design, a lot of people think it’s a chick SUV.

Rating: 4 stars (0 is worst, 5 is best)

*Article side note: Men of the world, please do the world a favor and don’t wear these hideous sandals. The Spies are of the opinion that only women should ever show their feet (in anything else but Birkenstock’s!) to the world.

Enjoy the photo tour of the New BMW X3, Munich and the surrounding area!

I still wouldn't buy it at any cost.

But I would take that 750 for a spin, as well as the huge TT and the new E-Class.

And the interior doesn't look "much improved" to me. Same cheap black plastic and ugly brown wood. In fact, same design. I've never liked the X3 and I never will.

I sure hope that they improved the interior, the old one was comparable to a Chevy Cobalt. Both have hard cheap plastic.

Somehow the interior looks way improved to me, but I can't really see what they changed. The exterior design somehow looks a little better too...But I'd never buy it.

Without a shadow of a doubt it looks much better. IF i'm not mistaken the lights are changed in the rear. Or "REFRESHED". Overall it looks a lot better. As for what has been changed I'm not entirely sure because I never paid attention to the X3 to begin with, It looks better now. However, for that $ i still would much rather get an RX350, FX35. More horsepower, luxury, and a quiet cabin.

Screw the X3, I'm more concerned with those hotties! I went to France and Italy and those women go crazy over young, chiseled featured black men like myself. I was literally getting propositioned as I walked down the street...wouldn't doubt that'd be any different in Germany, especially after they find out I drive an Audi!

White guys do better in Japan. ;)

That interior is almost as nice as an Audi.

the main difference to the interior, aside from the added swath of wood across the dash, won't be noticeable in pictures. Supposedly, and this is big if it's true, BMW completely changed the material the dash is made out of. The #1 complaint about the X3 was the cheap feeling hard plastic used on the interior. They have apparently replaced that, along with adding the extra wood and metallic trim pieces, with a more upscale material befitting a car of this class.

Good report 001.

I remember the first time I flew into Munich, it was about 8 years ago. An attractive woman in a uniform with an SMG (gun - not gearbox) stood with us as we had our camera's inspected, and we had to prove that they were camera's - not bombs - by taking a photo! anyway.. with one of my less good ideas I muttered "do you want to see the lethal weapon in my trousers"

Man that was a Mistake - she was not impressed at all.

But yes Mnich is a great city to be in, especially as a BMW enthusiast and a faith beer drinker.

Sadly, the brothel subject regarding stations across the world is a fact. It is actually rather pathetic when (if) you see it.

On the other hand, I saw an NBC (or ABC special) a little under a year ago regarding the negative portrayal of Asian men and how they were most likely to be single at the age of 30. Following them were African-American women. Being Asian though, I would have to say that Asian men are either too feminine (or nice) or excessively trying to assimilate into a meathead American mentality.

I don't have anything against interracial relationships but when you despise no one but your own people the way people do in my county, it gets rather pathetic. But it could get worse if you an Asian visiting Australia =))

Regarding the BMW, though, it is an absolute monstrosity! That is an opinion that is likely not shared amongst the major population. Of course, I can look past hood ornaments.

Still one of the ugliest suvs ever made. They'd have to change the front end , the rear end and add a hoffmeister kink in it for me to ever even think about considering it. I wouldn't even drive it at the Susan G Komen events. Its just ugly.

Nice pics! Is it me or do all the German airport hotel rooms look the same?

I think the X3 is "cute".

If interested, I would get one sooner than later.

They are supposedly going to start shifting some X3 production from Germany to the South Carolina X5 plant in the coming months. Quality will likely take a hit in the process.

Agent63-

Why do you (and most everyone else) compare the RX350 to the X3? The current RX is actually BIGGER than the '06 X5-- and about the same size as the new '07. It's just a much better value.

But the X5 has a more substantial feel to it, and the interior seems more upscale. The RX's confused interior design got old fast.
