To Wagon Or NOT To Wagon? That Is The Question...

To Wagon Or NOT To Wagon? That Is The Question...
Yesterday, I received an interesting question from my dear friend’s co-worker. Let me provide you with a bit of context.

He is a gearhead. This is the kind of guy that goes on track days and loves his BMW E46 M3 to pieces. Yes, it is taken care of. Yes, it is a manual. And, yes, he can drive quite well. But, the time has come in this gentleman’s life where he and his wife are ready to start a family.

So, now what?

Obviously, the E46 is staying, however, his wife will need a set of wheels to get around. Should he settle and get a Mercedes-Benz sport-utility vehicle, or something of the like, or should he and his wife pursue something a bit more unique — a wagon?

Take, for example, the Volvo V60 Polestar. He asked me about this vehicle and having had the chance to recently drive the S60 Polestar I weighed in. The simple answer is no. I’ll explain in that review.

Having said all of that, I wanted to pose this question to the Spies: What would YOU add to your fleet if you need utility, want something unique and are looking to spend up to $60-65,000 smackers?

Having had a gaggle of kids - there was rarely a time in my life when I did not have at least a station wagon - and ALSO probably had a Full Size Multi Passenger Van as well. WHen You are carrying a number of kids - safety is the requirement - not uniqueness. Unfortunately - there really is only one Large Station Wagon left on the market - the Ford Flex. And it was never a looker. The area was taken over by first - mini-vans - and then by SUVs and Crossovers. There is little in the 60,000 range that is big enough (Maybe a Mercedes E Station Wagon) and the Flex will never be in that range.

I do feel that there is a place for smaller Station Wagons - and would buy a Cruze or Malibu wagon(Or Focus/Mondeo) if they sold them here - but Utility requires more room than the compact wagons actually have. AND I would have a hard time finding a compact wagon in your price range.

Not for me. Wagons, or "estate cars" -- the high-n-mighty word for station wagon -- remind me of my dad's car. But that's just the 100% subjective stuff in my head.

I recently bought an Audi Q5 mid-size SUV (cross-over?) It has many of the characteristics of a wagon -- interior volume, cargo, back hatch -- yet to *my* eyes, it looks attractive and doesn't remind me of my dad's car.

Get what you want folks! Even though I'm not into station wagons, I realize they're not for *me*. But if you like 'em, I won't be judging you because of that.

@Agent00R...a conventional car seat would be a cramped proposition in the Volvo S60 Poledancer.

The Mrs. and I have a Ford Flex. Despite being a big, roomy vehicle, 4 car seats make it snug. We will probably have to consider a Suburban or Escalade if her desire to have a total of 6 kids comes to fruition.

As messy as kids are, I'd suggest not getting anything too pretty or expensive. The Flex gets a full interior detail/shampooing every other month.
