The Dirty Dozen: Independent Testing Finds 12 European Automakers Diesels Guilty Of Massive Pollution Levels

Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi have joined the growing list of manufacturers whose diesel cars are known to emit significantly more pollution on the road than in regulatory tests, according to data obtained by the Guardian.

Wide range of cars emit more pollution in realistic driving tests, data shows

In more realistic on-road tests, some Honda models emitted six times the regulatory limit of NOx pollution while some unnamed 4x4 models had 20 times the NOx limit coming out of their exhaust pipes.

“The issue is a systemic one” across the industry, said Nick Molden, whose company Emissions Analytics tested the cars. The Guardian revealed last week that diesel cars from Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Citroen, Fiat, Volvo and Jeep all pumped out significantly more NOx in more realistic driving conditions. NOx pollution is at illegal levels in many parts of the UK and is believed to have caused many thousands of premature deaths and billions of pounds in health costs.

New report links thyroid cancer rise to Fukushima nuclear crisis

The finding, based on screenings of around 370,000 Fukushima residents aged 18 or younger at the time of the accident, “is unlikely to be explained by a screening surge,” the researchers said, pointing to radiation exposure as a factor behind the rise in thyroid cancer cases.

A Tokyo doctor who has moved to western Japan urges fellow doctors to promote radiation protection: A message from Dr. Mita to his colleagues in Kodaira, Tokyo

"In Tokyo, the first mission of the disaster response concerns how to deal with earthquakes.

In the event of a South Eastern Earthquake, which is highly expectable, it is reasonable to assume a scenario of meltdown in the Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka prefecture, followed by radiation contamination in Tokyo."

"It is clear that Eastern Japan and Metropolitan Tokyo have been contaminated with radiation."

Is Japan becoming extinct?

"After years of paying limited attention to academic and media warnings about the declining birthrate, aging population and complaints from the rest of the country about the overconcentration of people and resources in Tokyo, political and corporate leaders in Japan were jolted by the conclusions of a 2014 book by Hiroya Masuda, a former Iwate prefectural governor and head of a government committee on local revitalization.

“Local Extinctions,” Masuda’s detailed report of population changes, used the latest official figures from the government’s National Institution of Population and Social Security Research to show that 896 cities, towns and villages throughout Japan were facing extinction by 2040."

"130 ‘radioactive’ Japanese cars banned from entering Russia

The Fukushima nuclear plant was hit by an earthquake and a tsunami in March 2011, which resulted in the world’s biggest nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

Leakage of radiation-contaminated water has been the major threat to population and environment of Japan and neighboring states from the very beginning of the crisis at the facility, situated just 250 kilometers from Japan’s capital city, Tokyo.

However, the plant’s operator, TEPCO, did not acknowledge that contaminated water was escaping from the Fukushima plant into the ocean, and that it was unable to stop the leaks, until July 2013"

A total of 70 used cars imported from Japan and found to have increased levels of radiation are being stored in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and cannot be sent back, according to Silk Road Reporters citing local news outlets. Car retailers in Kyrgyzstan, who have been importing significant numbers of used cars from Japan for resale in the country, have been finding cars that exhibit levels of radiation above normal. Several batches of cars have been seized by the government during the last three years and have at times been sent back to Japan through an agreement with the Japanese government. However, irradiated cars keep turning up in Bishkek, the capital, and not all of them are being detected in a timely manner.

"These cars cannot be dispatched back. Neither China nor Japan will accept them. For this reason, we have to keep them here and deal with their further disposal," Tolo Isakov, director of the Disease Prevention Department in Bishkek, told the AKIpress news outlet, according to Silk Road Reporters.

I would say it is good that this became known, as diesel that we have really may not be all that good for our health after all. And I think this scandal will make Volkswagen stronger in the near future, as they have learned the lesson.

But really? Are they going to keep saying diesel is killing the planet when Japan has done far more damage onto the Earth with their Fukushima radiation?

Where is justice in this world?

The difference with VW and other diesels is the intentional disabling the pollution controls needed to pass the tests. The fact that normal driving patterns emit higher levels shows the test methods need revision and may indicate small diesel powered vehicles may be nearing the end. So Europe love of diesels appears to be short lived. Makes you wonder if Toyota had figured this out years ago and knew investing big in diesel was a waste with hybrid/hydrogen being the better investment.

If we as a customers can't trust anymore because I will not personally , then start checking all brands and we are going to see a huge sorprise from the big part of them. So let begin , test for all of them.

The bottom line: diesels are still dirty in this day in age or no such thing as a clean diesel. Electric vehicles is the way to go as far as the near future is concerned.

The bottom line is - you can not correct every emissions problem. THere are areas of the country that have high hydrocarbon levels because of emissions from Evergreen Trees. There is no such thing as a clean internal combustion engine - all of them give off emissions. However - with the use of proper controls - both gas and diesel engines can be made to meet government standards.

Electric is simply passing the emissions downline to the power plant which- at least in some cases - can be worse. And the infrastructure to support a hundred million electric vehicles simply does not exist today - and would be an incredible expense. With our current supply structure already near capacity at times in the summer due to air conditioning - we would need lots of new power plants - and lots high tension lines - to support it.That takes lots of time (Getting permits will take years) and lots of money. And then - add in the loss of jobs from eliminating the Oil industry - and that will simply not work either. Electric - as long as it is a small part of the equation - helps - but it is NOT a near term solution to internal combustion engines.

Don't forget there is excess capacity during nights that today goes unused. Also chargers could be utility controlled to even out the power grid. Cleaning up emissions on a fixed large scale is more effective than something rolling down the road.

While there is SOME capacity at night in some areas - that is not true in many major metro areas that work 24 hours a day. However - it still does not come close to the amount that would be needed to replace MOST of the cars on the road.
You would still need the infrastructure in houses and parking garages that is not there - to hook the cars up - and remember that a lot of people live in apartments where that is not available to them.

Also note - the car that can replace a gas vehicle for many drivers is either VERY expensive or does not exist. WHile there are some people who live within a distance of their work to use an electric car for transportation, there are just as many that would need extended range vehicles(Expensive) - or Plug in Hybrids(Still need gas) to get back and forth. For others - an electric vehicle that requires more than 10minute charge time (Salesmen for example) won't work at all. And there is still no replacement for gas or diesel for long distance trips and/or TRUCKs.

And the biggest problem is the MONEY to buy these vehicles. Most people in the USA cannot afford a new vehicle now - and certainly cannot afford the prices for those electric vehicles. You cannot take their cars away - the government would never get such a deal passed. Hell - they cannot pass any bills now. If you think the NRA is strong - just wait and try to make their cars illegal. You would have a revolution. So - none of this is a NEAR TERM solution. It will take DECADEs if not centuries.

QUESTION: Are the "real world" reading inconsistencies limited to just diesels? Could gasoline engines show the same type of lab/driving rating discrepancies?

VW IS SMALL ...COMPARED TO ALL THE DIESEL TRUCKS GM BUILT OVER THE DECADES....

SHUTDOWN GM...THEY BUILD DEATH TRAPS AND THEIR MURDERING EXECUTIVES ARE STILL WALKING THE STREETS BECAUSE OF BARACK MOHAMMED HUSSEIN OBAMA...

DON'T BUY GM DEATH TRAPS. ONLY WAY TO PUT A STOP TO THE KILLINGS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD.

Sorry - but VW today is larger than GM. IN addition - the current GM company does not produce large Diesel Semi's - and have not. THe GM company that actually built and sold THOSE vehicles is already gone. Shutting down the current GM won't take a single truck off the road.

All it will do is transfer the production of those vehicles to a Foreign entity - along with all the jobs GM provides directly or in the pipeline to production.

OF course - It was GEORGE W BUSH who bailed out the Auto Companies - who on December 19, 2008 - lent 17.4 billion dollars to the car companies - Bush Diverted finds from the TARP program to do it w- bypassing CONGRESS - and this was 2 months before Obama was sworn in - in his first term. While Obama continued and extended the program - he did not initiate it - and there will be tea party idiots who will continue to try to rewrite history -but is was the REPUBLICAN president that YOU should blame.
