Toyota Hopes To Eliminate Gasoline Powered Cars By 2050
Toyota, under ambitious environmental targets, is aiming to sell hardly any regular gasoline vehicles by 2050, only hybrids and fuel cells, to radically reduce emissions.

The automaker promised to involve governments, affiliated companies and other “stakeholders” in its push to reduce average emissions from Toyota cars by 90 percent by about 2050, compared with 2010 levels.

Electric cars weren’t part of their vision, outlined by top Toyota Motor Corp. officials at a Tokyo museum on Wednesday, striking a contrast with rivals such as Nissan Motor Co., which has banked on that zero-emissions technology.

Much of this depends on how the price and supply of oil moves over the next 35 years. I remember in the 1970s oil crisis that the world only had 30 years of supply of oil left - coal had a long life ahead of it because of large deposits in the USA and elsewhere. And the US would continue to face reductions in domestic oil supply - and import more and more oil. Ie - the Sky was Falling!

Today - we have more oil on the market than is in demand - resulting in lower prices - and as time passes - technology improvements are likely to result in even more oil being discovered - along with the use of fracking and developing the Canadian tar fields - means that we are almost energy self sufficient again. The question remains - will all the alternative - stop gap measures be needed or desired - until a true SOLAR power alternative can be developed.

I hope they don't build it in USA. That means there will be reliability/quality. issues. I'll gladly pay the premium to buy a vehicle made in JAPAN ...EVEN W/ RADIOACTIVITY.

GM on the other hand has killed hundreds, injured thousands...denying anyone knew about the ignition flaw. Spent taxpayers money to pay back govt bail out, and yet NO executive has gone to prison. pLUS POISON MILLIONS W/ THEIR DIESEL TRUCKS. EPA SHOULD GO AFTER GM..VW IS SMALL POTATOS!
