Infiniti Stands By Model Name Changes In Spite Of Two Year Sales Decline
Changing its vehicle names two years ago to variants of Q and QX harmed Infiniti sales and awareness in the U.S., but company officials still believe it was the right thing to do.

“We saw a drop pretty much across the board when we switched names,” Sean McNamara, senior manager-product planning for Infiniti Americas tells media at a ’16 QX50 event here.

The nomenclature change was shepherded by former Infiniti President Johan de Nysschen, now president of Cadillac, to align the Japanese luxury marque more closely with its German competitors as it expanded globally.

I don't think it's the model names that are responsible for Infiniti's lagging sales. For starters, the awkward exterior styling is a big put-off for many folks. Make something beautiful to at least get people into your showrooms.

@TheSteve you are right with the styling. I seriously think that by going to NAMES rather than alphabet soup could have helped.

Infiniti Skyline and so on.

Things are usually aptly named...Q as in Quazy! or Quacky! Really though I'm a car enthusiast and cannot for the life of me correctly name one Infiniti car. If I cannot name it how can I recommend it to anyone who asks me for advice. I don't think I'm alone in this.

Infiniti and Acura are practically done. Japanese engineering is dead, and Lexus is being desperate but they will not really do well anyway, like how they keep failing even though they keep making new cars. Because honestly, who wants to buy a *cough* radioactive *cough* Japanese "luxury" cars? No one, except idiots or people who only care about reliability (Meaning grandpas and non car enthusiasts)

The G brand had built up some pretty good equity. They should have kept it going instead of trying to bring back the forgotten equity of the old Q45

It's too bad Infiniti thinks it's the names of its cars that is causing its sales slump. Just another clue that they need to get a clue.

On that note, they need to hit the ball out of the park with the Q60 and they need to get that car out now.

The naming convention is horrible. I can even tell which is a compact, midsize or full size car they have. They all start with a Q. What the hell where they thinking.

Gt he convention is the same as Audi's. Not surprisingly. Just swap an A for a Q, or Q for a QX and add a 0. People understand Audi's, yet they don't get Infiniiti. I believe it is because a lack of exciting products that people just don't care.

re naming: The Audi Q5 is a "Q" name, and it's one of the most popular luxury SUVs, so evidently having a Q name does not kill sales. It must be something else.

I look at the Q45 as a special car. when that car came out originally it was either that or the ls400 rivalry. along the way it lost its appeal and the lexus took off.
if infiniti wanted they could have brough back the Q name for a worthy car, not a g37 thinking it would excite all those who loved the original Q45.
to top it off the had a q50 and q40 ( g37 ) at the same time !! seriously who does that crap ????
imagine mercedes selling the new C400 and the old c350 at the same time..
infiniti sucks!! the only good thing is you can lease a 300+ hp q50 for like 350-400 per month and with any other brand for that kinda power you spend much more.
id be more than happy if they went back to their original naming schemes.
g, m , q, fx, qx.. cars i actually know.
I'm a car guy and don't know their retarded lineup !!!

Confusing Q naming. Lexus "took off" because of loyal Toyota owners, more so than Nissan, moving upmarket and ES sales added stability. Adding RX to line up cemented Lexus lead over Infiniti.

Infiniti is a POS! Nissan/VW/AUDI/BMW are all POS.

What are they supposed to do in the wake of that corporate drifter, Johan de Nysschen's, decision to change it all. Go back to what they had? That would make them look even more indecisive. The guy was there just long enough to cause issues that they have to live with for a while now.

Go to names and a new design language that is attractive would be my advice.

Just as the G37 was rebranded the Q50 for its redesign, Infiniti should have staggered the rollout of the change in nomenclature to align closer to the years leading up to each vehicle's redesign. Instead they changed them all at the same time while many of the models, still in the early part of their current iteration, had the same design the very next year. People (potential new customers) expected new cars but saw the same thing on the dealers lot. Good strategy, bad timing on the execution.
