German Government Forces VW's Hand With Mandatory Recall Of Diesel Cars
Germany's federal transport authority, the KBA, will force Volkswagen to recall 2.4 million vehicles in the country affected by the automaker's software that can cheat emissions tests.

German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt today said the KBA had ordered VW to start a mandatory recall of the cars at the start of 2016.

"The KBA will monitor the start of the recall action and its progress," Dobrindt told reporters in Berlin.

This "scandal" is getting quite blown out of proportion. No one died, and although VW crossed the line, clearly, other car makers have taken advantage of the grey area around emissions and fuel economy testing for years.

A few examples are, recently, those silly start-stop systems that people routinely disable and longer ago, those equally silly "skip shift" systems that had manual shift vehicles "lock out" gears forcing drivers to shift from 1st to say 4th in an effort to get better mileage.

I am quite certain that if the govt or a clever researcher catalogued all the ways car makers "game" the system, there would be many more such automakers with issues like VW's - though VW seems to have pushed it a bit too far.

Everyone's panties are in a twist about this, but VW (and other automakers who have done the same thing but not gotten caught) will change the software, which will make the MPG's and acceleration times of the vehicles drop slightly and we will all get on with our lives.

Do individuals have to die for this not to be blown out of proportion? If the likes of VW were to have their way, people would not be able to live, much less die. Your argument is flawed; you are contending that since others have or might have transgressed, VWs transgression is not such a big deal.

You are saying that it is not such a big deal that this man killed that man, as those other men were killed by these men. It is a big deal and no no qualifiers are needed. VW was caught cheating and they should be held accountable.

@ TeibNet: Your comment proves exactly what mre30 is saying. Yes VW messed up, but compare TDI emissions with Trucks, Buses, Ships, etc. and then lets compare who killed how many
