Insiders Claim Volkswagen Has Several Versions Of Cheat Software In Widespread Use
Volkswagen made several versions of its "defeat device" software to rig diesel emissions tests, three people familiar with the matter told Reuters, potentially suggesting a complex deception by the automaker.

During seven years of self-confessed cheating, Volkswagen altered its illegal software for four engine types, said the sources, who include a VW manager with knowledge of the matter and a U.S. official close to an investigation into the company.

What a piece of crap company. This has caused all European diesel prices to fall. There fraud maybe the end of diesel.

Maybe in the USA - but since Diesel is much less expensive than gas in Europe - it will survive there. However - I still believe that since Automakers regularly test the cars of Rival manufacturers - that far more than just VW knew about the software at the least. Whether they did the same remains to be seen - however - the current crop of diesel engines that use a urea solution to reduce Nox emissions can indeed pass emissions testing.

If this problem was noted on Gasoline engines - one would not suggest the end of them - so we have to wait and see.

I tend to believe the test results showing problems with diesels not meeting requirements in real world driving. Once this is cracked down on, diesels likely will be too expensive to meet the standards, at least in Europe and US. I imagine there are plenty of countries without strict standards.

It will be curious to see if VW loses future awards, like persistent Car and Driver spots.
