CAR WARS! SUV Edition: Utilitarian Land Rover Discovery Sport vs. Plush Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class
In the world of entry-level luxury sport-utility vehicles, it seems that the competition is stronger than ever. And, more entrants are hitting showrooms quicker than ever.

Two all-new examples of that are the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. With the GLC ready for take off and the Discovery Sport arriving in dealerships this year, this will make for an interesting battle.

The Discovery Sport is, predictably, like all Land Rovers. This means it's a utilitarian's dream. With a rather teutonic exterior, it doesn't look like the company designed it to be anything but a bit simple. Its interior isn't any different with nice materials that aren't too showy or exotic. If you're looking for an entry-level SUV that can do a bit of off-roading and isn't over the top, the Discovery Sport may be the choice for you.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC is essentially the Discovery Sport's foil. That's because it has a more evocative exterior design and its interior — from what I've seen — is essentially a replica of the C-Class. This means it is class leading and features some really nice bits and baubles. The thing is, however, that's not for everyone.

So, what's it going to be, Spies? Would you rather have the Land Rover or Mercedes-Benz?

The front-end of Mercedes' SUV's, specifically this new GLC and the new GLE, is pretty mundane. I wish Benz would make it look a bit more aggressive.

I do not think the C class front end carries well on an SUV

Agreed, jeffgall. It's so devoid of character, it's surprising considering MB's recent designs. Even the GLS' grille is pretty boring. But, no, I don't want to see Escalade-scale BBQ grille front-ends!

The front end on the discovery has more presence than the GLC, however the rear end and interior on the GLC makes the Discovery look like old news

Since one of my main priorities with an SUV is that it have some off-road ability I would take the Disco Sport. Also we have had good luck with our Evoque, reliable. Nice driving, good off-road. Probably would have waited for this though as the Evoque is very small, shorter than a Ford Focus, so not a ton of room.

i really don't get all the love and attention on the discovery sport. it looks like a range rover--but it is not one. the only thing it has going for it is 3rd row seating. personally i would get a number of other cars like the porsche macan or x3 over it unless i needed 3rd row seating. however it is priced in Asia like an X5 and i would take an x5 over it any day (which i did).

The true test is which one will end up in the shop first.....
