Power And Luxury? What Automaker Sums Up BOTH The Best?

What do you get when you cross a Porsche 911 Turbo with a Chevrolet Corvette Stingray? The kneejerk response might be the Jaguar F-Type R because of its lithe chassis, big power and lively exhaust bark.

Perhaps more correct is the ’16 Mercedes AMG GT S, a 2-seat long-hooded stunner that conjures the best attributes of the gull-winged SLS AMG Coupe, which ended a 4-year production run in 2014. Of course, the GT S has two conventional forward-hinged doors, but the dimensions, packaging and design show the evolution from the pricier SLS.

Personally, I'm not impressed with power and luxury alone. Lots of vehicle makers are doing it. BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Porsche, Rolls Royce, Bentley, and even exotics, like Ferrari and Lamborghini. It's not news.

What impresses *ME* is when a car manufacturer can combine reasonable levels of power + luxury + fuel efficiency, AND at a price that doesn't exclude everyone who isn't a millionaire. That captures my attention and admiration! The Audi Q5 3.0 litre turbo-diesel comes to mind. It has a whopping muscle-car-like 428 ft-lbs of torque (0-60mph @ 6.5 sec), and can also do 36 MPG US (6.5L/100km) in the real world if driven gently. And it can be had for about US$48K. (And so far, it hasn't been implicated in VW's dreaded Dieselgate scandal.)

Mind you, if you have deep pockets, you might not care about fuel economy or a more inclusive price-tag.

Mercedes easily answers the Power/Performance/Luxury question more than anyone. What other luxury company has a more complete lineup of cars from top to bottom? What other company has a performance trim (AMG) for almost every model for the brand? None.

aside from BMW. Did you forget about that company? Have you even seen in person of driven the New 7-series? Blows the doors off the S550 in regards to performance and luxury.
