Rumour Mill: Next Gen R8 To Drop V8 And Go With Turbo 5 Cylinder?
Possibly mated to an electric motor, Audi's five-cylinder turbo engine could end up in the R8 - in place of a V8 model

There will be no V8 version of the new Audi R8. What there will be - according to the Ingolstadt rumour mill - is a cheaper five-cylinder turbocharged model, powered by a highly re-engineered version of the Audi RS3’s five cylinder turbo.

This may or may not get some additional boosting from a hybrid system in the fullness of time, although there will be a fully electric production version of the new R8, too, called the e-Tron

A 5-cylinder engine in a super-car could be the kiss of death, just because "5" is half of (V)"10" and much smaller than (V)"8". Even V6 engines in super-cars are not as well received as a V8.

OK. Let's dilute the styling and make it look like a run-of-the-mill TT. Let's make the front end look super awkward and the side blade look even sillier than the original. Now let's chop the V10 in half to a 5 cylinder (who cares what the output is, it's still a 5-cylinder.) Oh yeah—then let's charge super-car prices for this abomination. WTF are you thinking, Audi?

There will be another R8 given the Dieselgate fiasco?

I'd kill the R8 and keep Porsche and Lamborghini doing sports cars.

The problem is what cars are already engineered - and ready for production. You can cancel cars early in their development - but if they are really close to production - They have already spent the development money - so they may as well produce the cars.

Why not 5 and a half cylinders and also raise the price to over $200,000.
