Volkswagen Owners Not Impressed With $1000 Goodwill Offer - Want Total Refunds Instead

Volkswagen said Monday that it will fork over $500 gift cards to owners of VW diesel cars hit by its emissions cheating scandal, as well as a $500 credit that can be used at VW dealerships.

But dozens of unhappy Volkswagen owners say that the automaker's so-called "goodwill program" isn't nearly enough. They want the company to take the cars off their hands.

"I don't want their $500," said Steve Szabo, who bought his car last July. "They can keep their gratuities and buy this 2015 VW Golf TDI back, and I will take my hard earned money elsewhere."

It's important to note that this is NOT an "either/or" scenario. VW has stated there are no release forms or other strings attached to these cards. They're merely an interim goodwill gesture as VW figures out how to address the various aspects of this crisis (technical, legal, ethical, social -- e.g., the relationship with exists customers).

Of course, antagonistic and opportunistic lawyers spun this in their own favor, alleging that these cards are indicative of VW dragging their heels in issuing a full refund to disgruntled owners of VW cars.

As severe and widespread as this VW crisis is, I feel it's ridiculous to demand a car manufacturer issue a full refund instead of fixing the problem. We'll see in the coming months how VW proposes to do this, and whether it is a genuine and equitable compensation or just some PR spin.

FWIW, I bought a 3.0 litre Audi Q5 TDI in May 2015. So far, it has not been identified as an offender or amongst those with "irregularities," but the dust has not settled yet. I mention this because my virtually new vehicle is at risk of being implicated, and will likely be adversely affected in terms of resale value. So I do have some skin in the game, and no, I'm not eligible to receive these cards (they're for 2 liter diesel owners only).

Actually - in this case - demanding a full refund refund in the case of admitted fraud is not so unusual - or out of bounds. It is one thing when a manfacturer produces a vehicles that - for whatever reason- requires a recall because something is defective in the construction. It is entirely another when someone tells you they are selling you something it is not.

Good luck with getting a full refund.

VAG will say that actual performance delta was +/- "x"% with an initial sudden loss of the value = "y".

x + y + time consideration = individual settlement payment

Those going to court will have to show that their purchase of the vehicle was totally dependent on emissions value "x1" and planet friendly hugginess of "y1" and not based on an arbitrary window sticker values(VW would argue that those figures are only estimates and that the automotive buying public knew the figures were not accurate).

I'm no lawyer!

Full refund not out of the question though something closer to difference between purchase price less residual value more likely. VW committed fraud (admitted it) plus numerous other federal, state, civil and international crimes. They are going to bleed cash for many many years to come as this sham continues to unfold and unravel around the world. From my experience it would not surprise me if VW suffers $30 billion in damages and fines and more than twice that in lost sales, profits and market value. This will one day be a major case study in MBA and law schools everywhere. Worse than VW's losses is the impact on all businesses from future political actions based on corporate mistrust.

You do know that President Bush gave them money before President Obama guided them through bankruptcy?

You also know that GM paid back the loan with interest?

I was thinking of trading my 2013 Golf TDI during the summer; KBB listed it for $16,500; now $13,500. A couple of $500 cards aren't buying my market-value loss. Sorry, V-dub! You'll need at least $5,000 to keep me from joining a class action against your deceitful marketing and business practices...
