SPY SHOTS: AutoSpies.com breaks the first spy photos of the next Lexus LX470!
The brawny Lexus LX470 was introduced in 1998, and since then has had a couple of minor updates. Now these latest photos capture a future LX470 that is restyled and updated inside and out.

Caught during secret testing in southern Europe, the crew of engineers from Japan and Belgium had along with the prototype the current Toyota Landcruiser as well as a Mercedes ML for comparison.

At the front, the new Lexus revises the grille to have only 3 central horizontal bars instead of 4, and also integrates the headlights into a single unit instead of the two light clusters on each side used before. The front bumper is all new, but carries over the general shape with twin horizontal slots and a tapered solid area in the middle. Rear styling is almost unchanged, but has restyled taillights.

The interior is completely new, and features a very large screen for the navigation system surrounded by push buttons located both at the sides of the screen and below it. Styling of the passenger compartment looks even more luxurious than before, including wood trim even around the push buttons on the steering wheel.

The new Lexus LX470 should be ready for release some time in 2007.

wondering why an ML is there. I thought lexus was the best...why use a (gasp) german vehicle?

that is a big screen though.

i am reserving judgement until the official pictures.

I have a thing for the current LX... I think it's the most luxurious (and best-looking) Lexus ever made. And I hope the new one impresses me just as much.

This may be premature, but I'm not loving that front end shape.

*The front end shape reminds me of the GX.

I just felt like adding that.

And I think the GX is horrible.

mdalle,
in europe we don't get the lexus version, we only get the toyota land cruiser (LC amazon in some countries). it is the ultimate rebadge, only the head lamps looks changed, and imo looks horrible.

maybe the new one will be better, but i'm no sure if we'll get the lexus in europe.

Rupert-

Also, your standard LC (not the Amazon), which is a bit smaller, is badged as the Lexus GX and has wood trim and uglier rear lights in America.

I'm looking forward to seeing future pics of this vehicle. All the new Lexus vehicles look great. I don't see why this will be a disappointment. Everyone is uping their horsepower output, I'm interested in seeing what kind of torque and hp the LX's powerplant will have. My guess is about 360hp (slightly more than the upcoming X5).

The current one is really weak, just a Land Cruser rebadge.

A general statement about Lexus: one of the drawbacks to the L-finese design language is the unfortunate amount of negative space in the front fascia.

When has the LX been anything other than a luxurious LandCrusier rebadge?

I love the LX, but I know it needs a major update to compete with the Mercedes GL, and even the new Chevrolet Tahoe / Cadillac Escalade.

I own an LX and had started shopping for a replacement, but I guess I can wait for a year for an all-new LX rather than settle now for an unreliable Range Rover or technologically deficient GL [no touch-screen and no reversing camera].

Yes, sure, but RR is undeniably fabulous. Inside and out, it has a distinctive air about it that sets it apart from its competitors. It seems like a much higher-class vehicle with a more focused design. If I had $90K and needed an SUV, it would be RR Supercharged no question. It's worth the reliability issues; and if the reliability gets really bad LR just gives you a new one!

I love the current LX, too, but it has a coarse, old engine and dated styling. The interior has worn well, but a 270hp 4.7L V8 just doesn't cut it any more. Especially beacuse the same company produces a 4.6L V8 with 380hp!

I hope they put that in there! But it would be odd to call it the LX460 (a step backwards), so they may have to keep the 470 nameplate.

Actually the new engine will most likely be a slightly tweaked version of the new 5.7 liter going into the new Tundra. No specific specs have been revealed yet. Toyota officials only mentioned that the tow rating is well over 10,000 pounds.

The LX 470 will always be a rebadged Landcruiser. However thats not always a bad thing. Landcruisers (I mean the 4 door versions not the Prado) have always commanded a high price. In no way is it regaurded as a bargain 4x4 offroader. Also Landcruisers have a good reputation worldwide. I don't think Lexus will release this in Japan, but I suppose we'll have to wait and see.

On a side note, so far I like what I'm seeing. Hopefully the new LX will have more of an angular look vs sleek L-finesse styling. Although L-finesse works well on Lexus sedans, an SUV of this nature should have a chiseled rugged look. Lexus should use L-finesse to enhance the look of the LX, not as a base of design.

The Toyota Landcruiser has always been one of the best SUVs around. People can say the LX is a rebadged Landcruiser all they want. If you take something that is truly good at what it does and then add stuff to make it better, only a fool would not be able to see the resulting benefits.

A Range Rover will always have more "prestige" than the LX. Hopefully that presige will bring the tow truck to your Range Rover all the more quickly.

Why do people still knock Lexus for being a Toyota product? The cheapest vehicle Toyota makes has a higher level of build quality and reliabiity than the flagships of most other "prestigious" manufacturers.

I hope those complaining that the LX shares too much with the Landcruiser were equally upset that the last generation Range Rover used an evolved Buick engine.

i wonder if we'll get the toyota or lexus version in the uk? (LC amazon) the last (toyota) one was a seller (very popular with school-run-mums) but with a 5.7 as 00JT suggested, it would bomb. i hope there is a better diesel too, and also i wonder if it is a monocoque or a seperate chassis. does anyone know?

I think the LX is luxurious but as I don't know if it can uphold itself against the likes of Escalades. Something about the presence you receive when you see an Escalade that screams comfort and luxury. I guess it's the marketing + the celebs who own them.

For reliability LX no doubt, for 'looks' definately Escalade. However for value/performance/luxury the X5 or ML/GL would be good as well. Different targets but same segment.

I like Lexus interiors, very solid and very quiet. Plush ride but not too soft either. However, owning an ML or X5 is different because it's German. And owning German or Brit gives you a diff. feeling. It's not that Japanese brands are bad it's just the feeling of success when you are able to afford one.

IMO of course!

mitchatlexusofmarin-

No, you're completely wrong. The GX was a stupid car to make in the first place-- it's about the same size as an LX, and uglier to boot! There is NO room in between those cars for Lexus to pump in a stupid niche model like Mercedes! If they made the LX larger than this, noone would buy it.

The wife has an RX, and I respect Lexus in general, but the GX and the SC are the worst designs they've ever made (that's not saying much: they've made about 20 cars in their time). She wants a different feel- she's loved her RX300 and RX330, but she's ready for something more "upscale", and for no reason in particular won't consider another Lexus. Probable cars: E350 4Matic and XJ8 (no more SUVs).

S4, I believe there will be a vehicle LARGER than the current LX, (which is lacking in 3rd row seat room) leaving a slot for the current LX to be the "midsize". BTW... the replacement for the SC will be significantly sportier (more of a drivers' car)than the current one which I agree, is not much fun at all.

mitchatlexusofmarin,
i think the lexus's (and toyta lc's) lack of rear room can be explained by poor interior packaging (like those side hindged seats) .

LX and Land Cruiser need to be about the same size. The GX needs to have the new Tundra base (Sequoia) and the RX be a little bigger (just a little to compete with the MDX, X5, ML a little better - in size of course).

i couldn't have said it better!

there need be NO SHAME for any lexus based on a toyota, which itself has the MOST RELIABLE line of vehicles made on the planet. i'd take a toyota truck or suv over any mercedes suv. i KNOW owners of MLs, and they all complain about reliability issues!

standing on toyota's tall shoulders, lexus has NO PEERS, except in the INTANGIBLES like "tradition," perceived "prestige," etc. sorry, but i don't drive intrangibles. i drive HARDWARE, which i prefer to be of top quality and reliability.

from the other side, lexus also PULLS UP toyota. what other pickup truck can you buy that has an engine derived from a lexus V8? even corollas look like mini-lexuses.

People are always comparing the Land Cruiser to the Range Rover and saying how much more prestige the Range Rover has. But what no one realizes is that the Land Cruiser has been around just as long as the Range Rover, and it has proven itself as a reliable ruggid off-roading vehicle.

some years ago, C&D published an article about the vehicle of choice of Ethiopian rebels. which turned out to be toyota land cruisers.

being rebels, they could 'liberate' ANY cars or trucks they chose. they turned up their noses at land rovers as "too fragile."

a gov't plane caught one of their LCs in the open, and fired a missile and scored a direct hit on it. a coupla days later, they went back to salvage what they could.

turned out it mostly just the soft parts that got blown away. after replacing wiring and hoses, they were able to DRIVE IT OFF to fight another day!

with TOUGHNESS like that, who cares about looks!?

Wow...

The LC that sampharo posted is very, very ugly... it strays from the current model's innofensive (and quite good-looking) design to become a monstrosity of huge headlights and cheap-looking rear fascia. I understand that the one shown is probably a base model, but it just doesn't look as upscale...

Sad...
