Will The Jaguar XE oR Alfa Romeo Giulia Be Able To Make A Dent In The German Rivals Sales?

New entrants from Jaguar and Alfa Romeo in Europe's premium midsize market will find it tough to win market share from the established German players as pressure from SUVs slowly shrinks one of Europe’s core high-end segments, analysts say. IHS Automotive predicts the premium midsize sector will decline by more than 6 percent by 2020 compared with today.

The sector is dominated by the Mercedes-Benz C class, BMW 3 series and Audi A4, which accounted for a combined 80 percent of the segment’s 277,712 first-half sales, JATO Dynamics figures show.

Maybe I missed something here - but the Mid-size cars - The Mondeo - Insignia - etc - are actually sized like the Mercedes E Class - Audi A6 - Bmw 5 Series. And in fact they have more interior room than some of the premiums.

The 3/A4/C class cars are sized inline with compact cars inside.

Cars are not selling well in the Usa or Europe - and sales are down even in China. This is the era of the CUV - and all of these cars will be competing for a smaller market - that is actually getting smaller by the year. While Jaguar will likely be well accepted - the Alfa will have to prove itself as a reliable trustworthy car before it will sell well anywhere except maybe Italy (Where they are more nationalistic with their purchases than any other european country.)

Both Jaguar and Alfa Romeo have BOTCHED their product launches. It is taking FOREVER for the Camry-bland Jaguar XE to get here. It needed to arrive quickly not a model year later. The Alfa Giulia was going to be beyond slow to the market and now it's delayed.

Neither the XE nor the Giulia are particularly gorgeous. The C Class has that sewn up.

I'd say a Genesis G70 (C Class competitor's name???) has a much better shot at gaining traction in the market.

No way these two make much headway in the market for the near future based on one factor: Quality. Both Jaguar and Alfa are known for having severe quality issues.

Depends on the type of drivers both companies are going after.

If the European reviews are accurate, the Jag should out-pace the BMW and come in at a lower price. For people that think the BMW's styling has become to bland and the driving dynamics too bloated, it has a good chance as long as GM does not get too aggressive with the ATS' pricing.

The Alfa, though a good looking car, still has the stigma of being somewhat unreliable.

I think with both cars, the price will tell.

the sales numbers will speak. only the new C will get 'close' to refreshed 3 series numbers. there rest will screw up on distribution, quality or pricing (or all of them).

they may do better than the car they are replacing but i doubt the germans are concerned with their tiny market impact.

From what I have seen JLR has come a long way on reliability and quality, Alpha Romeo as well and I think this new car will help them improve their reputation further, especially here in US. I hope both do well and that they are soon both viewed as an alternative to the Germans.
