Texas Comes Out On Short End Of The Stick With 2015 F1 Event

The 2015 Formula One United States Grand Prix took place just over two weeks ago in Austin, Texas and was widely considered the best race of the year. It was a thriller which crowned British superstar Lewis Hamilton as this year’s F1 champion in front of 101,667 fans at Circuit of the Americas (COTA). However, in the short space of time since the race took place, its future has been placed in jeopardy.

The Grand Prix weekend was blighted by severe storms as Austin was caught in the periphery of hurricane Patricia. It led to fans being barred from watching the third practice session on the Saturday for safety reasons whilst qualifying was delayed until Sunday morning. By then the weather had cleared up and the track had begun to dry making for unpredictable racing conditions.

Currently, most F1 venues do not have the pull to command a set time frame during the race season to hold a race. This will only get worse as more venues are scheduled to come online and races are added and subtracted from the calendar.

I will not be surprised when Austin loses a spot on the calendar, especially with the crowds, and overall praise, the Mexico GP received the following weekend.

At this point, the FIA seems to want two things in a US GP:
West Coast, or west coast adjacent, race
Another night race
