Is The UAW Taking Short Term Gains Over Long Term Jobs With New Chinese Built Buick SUV

When the idea came up in August that might import a new Buick SUV made in China, the United Auto Workers’ top negotiator with GM called it a “tone-deaf” notion because of the “sacrifices made by U.S. taxpayers and the U.S. workforce to make GM profitable again” after the 2008 bailout.

But since then, two things have happened. First, UAW leaders have almost certainly sacrificed future jobs for hefty short-term pay increases in their new contract with GM. And second, it’s just been reported that GM plans to go ahead with its plan to import a Chinese-made, mid-sized Buick SUV to the United States that will be named Envision.

Expect no further emanations from the UAW brain trust complaining about this move. By taking not only GM but also Ford and Fiat Chrysler to the mat to extract the utmost short-term monetary gains for their aging members, in a knowing exchange of financial bounty for job security, union leadership made an epochal choice about the future of their organization: They are simply going to let it shrink in size and try to make each person in their dwindling membership as comfortable as possible in the process.

The article sites “sacrifices made by U.S. taxpayers and the U.S. workforce to make GM profitable again”, a UAW quote. The facts bear out differently:

1. GM goes bankrupt

2. The U.S. federal government, without consulting its citizens, borrows a mountain of money from a gigantic Chinese bank (you didn't think the cash was just sitting around, waiting to be spent, did you?), and gives it to GM in the form of (mostly) cash and buying worthless GM stock well above GM stock's last closing price before trading was halted, and well above The New GM's IPO share price.

3. The U.S. federal government sends the bill to U.S. citizens, their children, their grandchildren, and beyond in the form of an increased national debt, which currently sits around $18.1 trillion, or about $56,800 for every man, woman, and child in the US. Got 5 people in your house (mom, dad, and 3 kids)? Your household's share of the national debt is around $284,000. And yet, you're paying interest on that debt in the form of taxes. It's like having another mortgage payment monthly, just to pay the interest on the debt.

4. Old GM and its debts are erased.

5. The New GM is born, debt free, and is declared "profitable" shortly thereafter. Like magic. Cool!

And now to the matter of the UAW being ticked about GM manufacturing some cars in China...

UAW: Your competition, direct and indirect, is taking big steps to drive their costs down. A big part of a car's cost is the human labor it takes to assemble it. Everybody and their uncle, even luxury brands, are building manufacturing plants where labor is cheaper (e.g., Mexico, Eastern Europe, China) to drive down vehicle costs. If GM chooses to continue using relatively expensive US labor, it won't be able to compete, and therefore will have an even harder time selling their products, which will lead to lower profits and possibly to their next bankruptcy. Any questions?

More Buicks are sold each year in China than in the USA. It could be said Buick is now a Chinese brand engineering and manufacturing vehicles for that customer base. If some of those vehicles fit the needs of USA market then export them to the USA, or if the volume is great enough assemble them in the USA if that makes economic sense. The UAW is living in the past. From 1945 to the 70s the USA was the only game in town. The UAW had the manufacturers under their thumb. That has since changed and the UAW now has competition all over the world.

The UAW is settling fast these days because they know that unions are anathema to progress and that sooner or later right-to-work legislation will kill them.

It was only a matter of time before Obama's bro who lives in China got this going. Just guarantees I will always buy Jap and Kraut cars, or Fords unless they're built in Mexico.

uaw leadership is always drunk and doped up! So if you came to them and said GM will start making cars on Mars by martians lead by Matt Damon. Plus slide them a envelope with 10g's.. they would be ok with it!
