SPIED: Mercedes-Benz's S-Class Is Getting A REFRESH — What Would YOU Change If You Were In Control?
While we've seen the Mercedes-Benz S-Class essentially bulldoze the competition since its all-new debut, it has been out a couple of years now. And, the competition is starting to respond. That's where the all-new BMW 7-Series comes into play.

So, what is Mercedes to do?

A refresh is on the way and there's no question the three-pointed star will have to continue to bring its "A" game. Though from what we're being told, not much will change. You can expect the infotainment system to get some updates, however, the rest of the changes will be minimal.

But if YOU were in charge, what would be some things about the Mercedes-Benz S-Class that you'd make a point to change?

...More complex changes are expected for the interior. The S-Class's digital instrument cluster was one of its hallmark features when the car was first launch, but rivals have been quick to adopt the technology in their premium models.

For this facelifted model, Mercedes looks to be producing a wider, frameless dual-screen set-up, which will allow for a larger screen area. The new system will run the latest version of Mercedes' Comand infotainment software, and continues to be operated via a touch-sensitive controller on the centre console, although Mercedes is also known to be experimenting with gesture control...

As a current owner of a 2015 S550 I would suggest...1) while ride is fantastic I would tighten it up just a bit more...2) the heated steering wheel is defeated by the metal button surrounds which stay cold, heat the entire wheel...3) put a "home" button on dash to activate navigation system with one touch to get you home...4) heads up display should have options or just duplicate BMW's which is excellent...5)make 12v socket more easily accessible...6)owners manual poorly written and does not contain all info needed suggesting you go to infotainment in car for rest, worse manual of all cars I've owned over 50 years of driving...7) my friends Kia sedan has a more useful trunk swallowing our two sets of golf clubs more easily...8)keyless entry doesn't work if key in heavy winter jacket, BMW does better... Its a great car but needs to improve driver car interfaces and handling a bit more.

Maybe I would give the option of a tighter suspension - but I would not tighten up the basic one - since it is the Luxury market they are going after. My s-600 is the previous model so I don't have a lot of knowledge on this car - but I agree about the trunk - although on a refresh they cannot change that. The keyless entry thing should be an easy fix. ANd I agree that EVERY Nav/audio system should have a home button. While they are likely to improve some of the newer gadgets - I don't see much to change however. Sowe are nitpicking.

Cosmetically would not change much, new steering wheel in AMG variants already did wonders for the "feel".
S63 badly needs a more refined transmission to be on par with competition (8 speed)and S65 needs even more badly an AWD, since all that torque is for bragging rights only at the current.

he Lexus LS is UGLY - out of date - and has poor interior room compared to the S Class.

At Best - the LS compares with the Buick LaCrosse- at twice the price.Until Lexus produces a long wheelbase LS - with lots of rear room - they will always be well behind.

They don't need to change much. Styling alone will prevent the 7 Series was challenging the S in sales.

Stylistically, I would make the character line on the side rise, not fall so that the rear end doesn't appear to sag. I would also go to horizontal tail lights as on other Mercedes products.

Overall a very nice car, except 1 issue I have. How about doing something with that big long drive-in movie dash. Gosh - that reminds me of my father's Buick he once owned. They can do better than that dash layout.

Please fix the following 4 things:

(1) Get rid of the 2-spoke "Buick" steering wheel, with "Mercedes Benz" written in 1920's script.

(2) Re-contour the instrument panel (more along the lines of the S Coupe) so that it looks less like a movie theatre screen with better flow and transition into the doors.

(3) Biggest styling issue - please re-do the countour lines so that the rear end/trunk does not appear to be visually sagging. The rear end of the S550 is its worst element and has kept me from buying one

(4) Allow the sale/option of a spare-tire to supplement the run-flat tires, in the 25% of the time that they sidewall is damaged and the car will not drive with a flat tire.

I'm not crazy about that deep side crease and the front end. Ever since MB adopted those swoopy headlights (the Asian brands did them first), it has lost its distinctive Mercedes look, to *me*.

Aside from that, doesn't the S class pretty well define its market segment? Does it have any real competition? I just don't see BMW's 7 series as going toe-to-toe with the S.

1-eliminate clicking/cricket noise from hi pressure fuel injectors, heard with acceleration.
2-allow hi beam choice without having to retract/hold turn signal lever continuously for hi beam use.
3-restyle rear end, too generic/ordinary looking.
4-offer option of solar panel to cool/vent car when parked in sun.
