Hong Kong Orders Tesla To Wirelessly Disable Autopilot Feature - Fears Drivers Are Letting Car Drive Itself?

Tesla Model S owners in Hong Kong discovered this week features letting their luxury electric cars steer and change lanes automatically had been disabled wirelessly. The city’s Transportation Department demanded Tesla Motors Inc. disable the software controls two months after the company released the semiautonomous driving technology.

Local traffic officials cited concern drivers would become distracted in the city’s notoriously snarled traffic by the features that allow hands-free driving. Though Tesla emphasizes customers must keep their hands on the steering wheel, the technology is advanced enough that drivers are ignoring the instructions.

Honestly as soon as you say autopilot you imply it drives without you. Driver assist is another whole ball game.

People who have difficulties driving, like the disabled, the elderly, and the inexperienced would disagree. Autonomous driving will offer them the freedom that you and I enjoy driving our cars. If done right it will make the roads a safer place which is good for all.
