#LAAS2015: Will It Be Enough? Cadillac Says XT5 To Be A One Shot Wonder Until At Least 2018

#LAAS2015: Will It Be Enough? Cadillac Says XT5 To Be A One Shot Wonder Until At Least 2018

It didnt take long after the North American debut of the 2017 Cadillac XT5 for people to ask, “What’s next?” for the crossover-starved luxury brand.

At the Los Angeles Auto Show, Cadillac chief Johan de Nysschen told Automotive News that the next Caddy crossover will come in two years and would likely slot below the XT5, in terms of name — but not necessarily in terms of size.

Cadillac’s next crossover, the XT4, will likely go on sale in 2018 with a bigger, three-row crossover coming one year later to bookend the XT5. The battleship-sized Escalade will remain, and a smaller, subcompact crossover could arrive at the end of the decade to give the brand a full range to offer a crossover-crazed market.

It’s unclear if the XT4 will be a smaller four-door crossover or a “coupe” variant of the XT5.*

Two years is an eternity for product cadence.

Enough for what?

I still do not understand Cadillac and DeNysschen. They are obviously going after BMW as the best handling small sports sedans - but people are not buying them. They have abandoned the American large Luxury car market - all of their cars are smaller and have less space inside and smaller trunks than their competition. And they have stuck with that Arts and Science Look far too long - it is time to move on.

They have produced two prototypes that are gorgeous - but then we know that is not what DeNysschen wants - so we will never see them in production. The vehicle that is selling is not a car - but a CUV - now called the XT5 (Alphanumeric mumbo jumbo that doesn't sell cars) - which is not a high end Luxury vehicle - it is an RX fighter that isn't in the premium mix.

So - what will we get in two years - Will they replace all the cars with newly styled cars without arts and Science - that have been produced with class leading room as well as handling - NO. WE are waiting for them to come out with an SUV based on a Buick that is manufactured in China. Forget 2 years being an eternity - it will be an eternity before Cadillac actually does the most important thing - find out who would buy one of their cars - and what they want in them! And I will be dead before they actually produce the cars as well!

What will happen is that the Continental will arrive and will sell like gangbusters because it is traditional American luxury car that is not ashamed to be American.

Bold prediction: De Nysschen will be fired and Cadillac will move to names.

You all are delusional. Names for Cadillac will not happen. Lincoln on the other hand... As for the coming CUVs, why is anyone assuming that Cadillac will receive a version of the Buick coming from China? I don't think that is true at all. Personally, the vehicle below the XT5 could very well be RWD for all we know. (Cadillac has options) Furthermore, didn't DeNysschen go on record as saying that he'd like to see a Porsche Cayenne fighter? My assumption would be that this is the vehicle that slots above the XT5 as a sport-oriented complement to the Escalade.
Below the XT5 could be RWD or FW/AWD. I feel certain the later will NOT be a version of the Buick coming from China, as GM and Cadillac have too many other FWD platforms to use. (i.e. the smaller Chevy Equinox platform that's not out yet). My gut tells me it will be Alpha, and XT5 'may' be the lone FWD CUV until the even smaller one (X1, GLA-sized) premiers.

Someone has hallucinations about Cadillac's future.

The CT6 will arrive and die because in literally no way is it special. With the ATS and CTS languishing, the clock is ticking. As for the XT5, it's a good makeover of the SRX but that's about it. Lexus need not worry.

Tick, tick, tick...bye bye de Nysschen.

Maybe Cadillac can stack two XT5s on top of each other so they could make that honkin' grille even bigger!

As long as DeNysschen stays - you are correct - they will stay with Alphanumeric Mumbo Jumbo - BUT - that was good ONCE - when there were only a few manufacturers using that. Today - there are so many - that when you spout the letters and numbers - it could be anything. Eventually - someone in the hierarchy at GM will notice that - and attempt to move back to names. AN Eldorado - and a Fleetwood are Cadillacs - a XYZ5 may be a hyundai

I believe that Gm should do what Mercedes did - Make the base cars - Luxury cars - and make he "V" cars a sports tuned side of the company. And I would name the luxury cars - and leave the Alpha-numerics to the V-Cars. AS far as the next CUV - The Alpha Platform is too small for it. It is already smaller than the E2xx platform the XT5 is on. And we already know that the big CUV will be on the Omega/Ct6 platform - which is why IT is delayed. So-what is in between? Cadillac has no Chance coming up with another Platform for one in-between. As far as DeNysschen wanting a Cayenne fighter - unless he produces some major sales - he will be looking for it when he heads Genesis.

In addition - the Alpha Platform is not only small - it is expensive - making it unlikely for a smaller CUV as well.

I guess names & alphanumerics don't really much these days. Could the new Continental still possibly be cool with an alphanumeric name? Yes. But most auto fanatics would be pissed & that little detail will kill a lot of the good points for the new flagship car.

What's disappointing is that the XT5 aint even on the street yet & people are asking "what's next?!" Really, wtf....can they put the car on the road for some reviews 1st? Maybe we don't want a 3/4ths version of the XT5.

Noting that a new "...XT4 will be a smaller four-door crossover or a “coupe” variant of the XT5..." could be interesting. Which would show that Cadillac is ready to run WITH the big European "boys" a bit instead of staying in their safe little box. But they have to keep showing concepts & possibliites every year.

The problem with the XT5 is that it is not a street racer that the people who come to this site are looking for. I have repeatedly pointed out that the little sports sedans that the 3 Germans are making - and others are emulating - are not LUXURY cars - they are sports sedans. ANd it seems that this market is not getting bigger - the buyers are getting older and looking for a quieter - smoother - more luxurious car - and Mercedes is the only one to notice this - and separate their cars - from the sports car division(AMG).
