Now That The All-New Tesla Model X Is Priced $5,000 MORE Than The Model S, Is It A No Brainer To Step Up Into The SUV?
Since the conversation about a sport-utility vehicle variant of Tesla's wildly popular electric vehicle popped up we've been wondering "Will the Tesla Model S even matter when this thing launches?" While we've seen plenty of people run out and add a sedan Model S to their personal fleet, it seems like the Model X is the vehicle that will take the company to another level.

Why?

Well, simply put, people LOVE their SUVs with plenty of space and utility for whatever it is they do, be it skiing, taking the kids to soccer practice or moving their kids into their dorm room.

Although we're sure some people will add another Tesla to their garage, I think it's a safe bet that most people will only find a need to have one electric vehicle in their driveway. Having said that, now that the lower-priced Model X has been made known with a price tag only $5,000 more over the Model S, is it the no brainer decision?

What say you, Spies?

...Tesla Motors' long-awaited Model X, an electric-powered, long-range crossover with upward-opening second-row doors, has been priced at $80,000 before delivery charges.

That puts it $5,000 more than the lowest-priced version of the breakthrough sedan that turned Tesla into one of the most closely watched tech companies, the Model S...

Assuming you're already committed to a Tesla S, then checking out a Tesla X is a smart move.

But *without* that first commitment to a Tesla S, the whole "EV vs Everything Else" question arises, and in that scenario, an EV is a hard sell for most people. An expensive Tesla is an even harder sell for most people.

Tesla has sold less than 100,000 vehicles - and has lost money on every car they sold so far. With gas prices as low as they are - and unlikely even with a mid-east problem to go much higher - it is unlikely that EVs will sell to the general public - so the market is limited to those who prefer to be "green" and are rich right now. With Tesla having created a monopoly on its sales and service - making a USED Tesla that is out of warranty to be something other dealers do not want - the idea of actually buying ANY Tesla is for those for whom $100,000 is pocket change and they don't care if they lose money on the deal.. For the rest of us - A Tesla is a questionable purchase - especially a used one - where 300 mile tows to the dealer for service will add up to great expense. For instance - how many are going to buy a Tesla SUV when they find out their Sedan is not worth what they think?

Rememeber - when Tesla goes belly up - their cars will have no place to go for service. While they are adding outside Auto Body shops to their group - they have yet to add other service facilities to their authorized service dealers.

Why is so hard for the EV fan club to admit that EVs are not for everyone? Constant negative votes for those who say for good reason EV's are not for them. Single car households, apartment dwellers, long distance drivers, folks who are not wealthy enough to buy an S class, etc. Even folks who are "green" but whose electricity comes from fossil fuel plants may not buy one since an EV uses as much electricity per charge as a refrigerator uses in one and a half months.

From a personal vantage point, were I to add an all-electric vehicle to my fleet, the S would easily win over the X on looks alone. Add to that the incremental price and it's certain I would not consider the X.

I have a Mercedes - a three year old S-600 - it is a wonderful car - from a Manufacturer that has a long track record of being in business - and making a profit - and making fine vehicles. And - I have lots of options for where to buy parts - get service - both dealer and independent - or Myself as well. If I want parts - there are lots of dealers who compete with each other for business.

The Model X's squinty front end is horrible. Looks like something the visually challenged Prius designers would come up with.

gotta agree with you guys, i don't care how amazing this car performs, it has no heritage. for 50-70K MAX i can see myself possibly getting one. for these crazy prices of over 80k id rather get a bmw, benz, porsche, audi.

its no different than a clown buying an Apple gold watch for 10-17k . you have to be out of your damn mind !
you want a true time piece you get a rolex, AP, hublot among many others, not some crap gimmick like the apple watch.
