SPIED: BMW Just Won't Let The 5-Series Gran Turismo DIE — Next-Gen 5GT Spotted For The FIRST Time
The BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo is one of those vehicles I STILL cannot wrap my head around.

Yes, it rides on a 7-Series chassis, which means it is comfortable and luxurious. But, my God this thing is...hideous. Why wouldn't I just go get a well-equipped X5 than make everyone want to cover their eyes when I drive by?

One would think that at this point BMW would shut this thing down after a rather bleak first-gen model. Turns out they're doubling down for round two. No, I am not joking.

Recently spied for the first time undergoing developmental testing is the second-gen 5-Series Gran Turismo. It is largely covered up but there's one thing swirly wraps cannot hide is its still existent and massive hunchback.

Right now I am at a loss for words, so, I'll let our friends from Autocar take it from here.

...Set to arrive around 12 months after the new 5 Series saloon, which will be unveiled at the Paris motor show next October, the 5 Series GT will be the final of three body styles in the 5 Series range. A Touring model is scheduled to launch in Geneva next March.

The second generation of BMW’s more practical 5 Series variant will eschew some of the hatchback-inspired styling features of today’s car. These spy pictures reveal the rear of the car will receive a more clearly defined rear deck, while the sloping roofline appears to be steeper than before. At the front, we expect the GT to receive many of the same flourishes as the 5 Series saloon, with cues taken from 2013’s Pininfarina Gran Lusso concept car...

It must be sheer ego that keep this dumb idea going—it certainly isn't sales.

Until you own one you don't understand how great a car this really is. A 7 series chassis, huge back seat, versatile carrying capacity and a ride height between a sedan and SUV that makes entry and exit so easy.
It may not be pretty but boy it worms its way into your heart over time. My wife loves hers and I could not agree with her more...often borrowing I when I need to taxi people around or haul something large
or many things at once. Don't knock it till you live with one. A great car that flies under the radar.

The Pontiac Aztek was also capacious but that did not make it desirable in any way.

I hear you, @Pug, but these cars are not moving in volume.

So, we have to ask why keep this going?

This new version looks sleeker under the camo.

The camo really does improve the looks of the think. Maybe BMW will wise up and sell it with a camo option (at a premium price, of course.)

The few people I know who drive one - the 5 GT - basically do so because they are too rich to drive a Subaru. The person who loves a Subaru will love the 5 GT. Cue the Subaru jokes - yup, same people.

The 5 series GT is a almost 600 pounds heavier than a 5-series (3957lbs for a 535i versus 4540 lbs for a 535 GT). I don't really care that BMW chooses to make this available, except for the fact it stops imports of the 5 series station wagons.

I never thought it was as bad looking as the rest of the public. It was built to offer 7 series room in a more utilitarian package... People just can't get past that it's not what the neighbors have (not popular) because it's not a sedan or better yet the bandwagon SUV. I have had a few customers tell me they loved it's drive and packaging.
