BMW's i5 Long Range EV May Debut This Spring

BMW’s niche game continues to expand with the electric/hybrid “i” range, with the automaker seriously pondering a brand new i5. After long discussions, the project is about to take shape and get presented to the world as soon as next year, according to a company board member.

“You will see more ‘i’ products and we are in the final stages of deciding what the next car will be and when you’ll see it,” BMW sales and marketing board member Ian Robertson told Autocar. “We will look back 100 years at that point, but mainly into the future,“ he added.

Article: "...[the i3 is the] third best-selling EV in the world..."

Without unit sales numbers to shows us a relative comparison, it's sort of like bragging to be the 3rd most popular smartphone operating system in the world... right after Android and iOS (is that Windows with 3% market share?)

Personally, I'm glad that manufacturers are exploring alternative propulsion systems. Who knows? Some time in the future, when the alternative fuel is cheaper and cleaner that burning dino remains, it might become the new standard.

When designing the i5, I hope BMW realizes their "i" machines don't have to be rolling cartoons like the i3.
