Brilliant Or Bonehead? Lexus Has Actually Been Toying With The Idea Of A Luxury Pickup

Lexus has admitted its toying around with the idea of a premium pickup truck based on the latest Toyota Hilux.

Answering a question that no one really asked, Lexus is contemplating on the topic of a pickup according to product planning project leader, Makoto Tanaka. The Hilux-based pickup is being considered along with a seven-seat RX and a new compact crossover, but Tanaka mentions the pickup is “the least possible” to actually be built.

Prob wouldn't sell in any volume but if they trick it out and sell them for $100k, could still make money. Just be a super overpriced Tundra but some people would still buy it.

An F150 Limited starts at $59k, Platinum at $52k, King Ranch at $50k, even Lariat at $40k. What about Silverado LTZs and Sierra Denalis?T

hat is Lexus/luxury category, wouldn't quite use it to haul gravel or manure. :)
And yet how many of these are sold? What is their performance, equipment and features as compared to passenger vehicles? They're pretty damn nice hence the immense appeal.

Toyota's been trying to break into the full-size truck market for decades. If they can't quite compete on utility maybe they can on luxury.

Lexus should spending all that effort building a 3-row crossover instead! Truck and luxury don't mix.

Who the hell uses a 3 row anything short of a van? It's a rare thing to see 3 row SUVs. They're a waste of money which is exactly why you don't see many people buying them outside of the Big 3.

Luxury is great for autos and suv. But real men... drive real trucks..just need reliability, towing, and loading abilities. No need for speed and luxury!

7 seat RX = Brilliant

replacing the outdated and terrible GX and LX with one modern vehicle should be the next priority.

The Cadillac Avalanche sold a few copies but not enough to be significant.

The Lincoln F150 had less than stellar results.

Doing a Lexus premium pickupof the Hilux and not the Tacoma is the firstmistake.

The second mistake is size. Buyers with bucks like size.

Third mistake: Ram, Ford, Chevy, and GMC pickups already step into the premium price range and Toyota cannot get the Tundra to sell as well as the Amercans, so why do they think Lexus has a shot?

TOYOTA KNOWS..IT WILL TAKE TIME! THE BIG 3 HAVE BEEN AROUND MUCH LONGER.

BUT- I KNOW PEOPLE WHOM TRADED IN THEIR BIG 3 TRUCKS FOR THE TUNDRA...AND LOVE IT! LOVE IT! THROW IN TOYOTA RELIABILITY/RESALE VALUE BEST IN THE INDUSTRY...ITS A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE IT WILL OVERTAKE RAM..THEN SILVERADO...THEN F150! I WOULD BUY THE TUNDRA TRD PRO.

Actually, the Tundra has not been as reliable as oeople would assume Toyota to be. Quite the contrary.

Maybe they can create a new category and dominate it like the RX.

Expect a spindle grilled Toyota Highlander to be the "new" Lexus 7 seater.

These comments are hilarious.

Look at the Lexus' existing lineup:

LX, GX, RX, NX...don't they remind you of....Land Cruiser, 4Runner, Highlander, Rav4? ijs.

Don't know why they hadn't made a Sequoia-based Lexus yet...considering the popularity of the Escalade/Yukon Denali. Making a Tundra or Tacoma-based luxury pickup would be a cautious next step. The return of the Ridgeline will open those thoughts. M-B could do it & do well considering their model re-naming/re-branding.

It wouldn't take much to try a luxury pickup.
