Too Late To Save Diesel? VW Set To Debut New All Electric Concept At CES
At next month's CES2016 running from January 6-9, VW is set to reveal an all-electric concept car.

Prior to the event opening its doors to the public, a keynote speech will be conducted by chairman of the board of management for Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Herbert Diess, on the night of January 5. It is here where the new VW electric concept will be revealed and set to “illustrate the synergy between the Internet of Things and the automotive industry”.

I love my diesel, but I've also never driven an electric car. Based on what I expect an electric drivetrain to feel like, my feeling is that's I'd be perfectly happy with one. I'm going to be moving cross-country early next year, so a BEV would be difficult to manage. However, once I'm all moved, electric will definitely be on my radar.

For now, VW, get on the stick and figure out how to make my car as clean as you claimed. I know it won't take much for my Passat, since it already has AdBlue. But my Jetta is a different story. Get moving!

I, too, love my diesel (Audi Q5 3.0). I don't think diesel engines are going away any time soon. I'm under the impression that...
- Dirty diesel cars and light trucks,
- Falsified diesel emission numbers, and
- Virtually useless lab-only emissions tests
...are on their way out.

As for VW's electric offering, everybody and their uncle has jumped on the EV/hybrid bandwagon, even VW's Audi brand, so it makes sense that you'd see something from VW in the spirit of Me-Tooism. It's unfortunate for VW that their electric debut will be in the midst of Dieselgate, as I believe a non-trivial portion of consumers have been tainted by anything VW, no matter how good it might be.

To turn this around VW needs:

1. A new design language that is as much of a stylistic leap forward as the Ital Design first-generation Polo, Golf/Rabbit, Scirocco, and Passat were over the Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, Type 4 products. Their predicament is that dire.

2. A "Hyundai" warranty.

3. A new range of cars with completely new names that are gas, gas hybrid, and PHEV ready from the get go.

4. Price control.

5. Quality control.

A CC wannabe with an electric motor strapped in is PATHETIC.

VW should be silent until they are ready to reemerge.

Their current plan is making them look arrogant, cavalier, and dismissive of the issue and customers.

This is EXACTLY how they responded when 60 Minutes harpooned the Audi 5000.
