Porsche To Power Boxster And Cayman With Turbo 4 Cylinder And Rename as 718
Porsche has confirmed the facelifted Boxster and Cayman will be powered by four-cylinder turbocharged engines, while both models will be known as the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman respectively when they arrive next year.

The new name is a reference to the Porsche 718 of the 1950s. It was the successor to the 550 Spyder and used four-cylinder engines with great success – a 718 RSK won its class at the 1958 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race.

The renaming is a dumb idea. The 718 is a forgotten footnote. It would be like Ford doing a minor engine change in the Fusion and naming the car the Elite. Dumb as bricks.

I don't see me paying Porsche money for a 4 cylinder anything. I don't care about turbos, I don't really care how fast it is. I just don't see me doing it.

Several truly excellent Porsches were 4 cylinder. You're probably a hypocrite that can't even afford a new car.

And you're probably a douchebag with more money than sense. Regardless of which historic Porsches were 4 cylinders for my money in 2016 I will not spend 50-80k on a 4 cylinder Porsche. If you'd like to talk further about it email me. Tauronb2g@gmail.com

No "probably" about it, Matt is the biggest douchebag on this forum. Tries to bully everyone that disagrees with his idiotic comments. #BanMattTheMorn and take back our website.

I like the 718 name. Always cool to revive a heritage name like Audi TT, Fiat 124 Spider, etc.

Side stepping personal bashing lets look at the facts. The industry is changing, V8's and even V6's are becoming rarer commodities these days. BMW's I8 has a turbo 3 cylinder and electric power and will do 0-60 in about 4 seconds. While most are not known to sound decent the Fiat 500 Abarth's engine note sounds fantastic. Being that this is not an inline 4 cylinder and rather a "flat 4 cylinder I suspect it might sound pretty decent. The reality of it is regardless of price point the industry is going to 4 cylinder and 3 cylinder turbo's with electric power as supplemental in the future. Sports cars will probably be the last holdouts for V8's and sixes provided the car maker can continue to afford producing them in small numbers. I seriously doubt there will be "any" V8 muscle cars in 10 years. So in the next 10 yrs. if you want to by a 50 plus grand sports car don't be surprised if there is no V8 or V6 available.

it's why I broke the bank and bought the Cayman GT4. One of the last of it's kind before regulations and technology change driving forever as I know it. The newer cars will be faster and more fuel efficient, but I'm a relic of the olden days. I dreamed of an internal combustion sports cars. The sounds, the smells and the feeling I get when I go out and drive at sane speeds. Yes, I should care more for the environment and my carbon footprint and I'll definitely make a wise choice with my daily car. For now, mid life is awesome rowing a flat 6 normally aspirated fossil fuel burning car. I'll keep it as long as they allow me to run it on the road and petrol is available.
