VW Says In 2005 Engineers Ran Out Of Options So Cheated Instead
A small group of Volkswagen engineers began working as early as 2005 on emissions cheating software after they were unable to find a technical solution to U.S. emissions controls as the automaker pushed into the North American market, executives said Thursday.

The company in September admitted to have cheated on U.S. diesel emissions tests with the help of software installed in engines. The software was built into 11 million cars globally, about 500,000 of which were in the U.S., from 2009 to 2015.

It has confirmed to have cheated only on the U.S. tests, which are more rigorous than European ones for the polluting emission nitrogen oxide.

In an update on the company’s investigation in the case, Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch said engineers in 2005 were unable to find a technical solution to U.S. nitrogen oxide emissions within their “timeframe and budget,” and came up with the software that manipulated results when lab testing was done.

Man, the spin sure continues, doesn't it?

When a VW executive demands, "Meet the emission requirement, or I'll find someone who will," is that an example of engineers running out of options? I feel it's much more an example of bad leadership, systemically ruling through tyranny, intimidation, and fear, as confirmed by the testimony of past and present VW employees.

And over the past 10 years, since 2005, has VW not had the ability to legally pass emissions tests, so they continued to cheat? Or is it more likely that because VW is ruled through intimidation and fear that execs turned a blind eye to goings on, and therefore absolved themselves from (1) knowing what challenges their engineers are facing, and (b) addressing past issues... until the world at large discovered anomalies and confronted VW?

In my view, VW is still NOT coming clean, and not putting their cards on the table. They're still covering their butts, scapegoating, and trying to blame a few individuals.

I remember being eviscerated here for divesting of VW/Audi/Porsche because of their predatory practices against dealers and consumers.

VW is still covering their asses.

VW needs to be broken up and sold off in retaliation for their dishonesty.

As someone who has worked for a number of companies through the years, I can tell you that this sort of management approach is extremely common: "You guys need to find way to deliver these numbers . . .". No one is explicitly told to falsify results or game the system, but the employee trying to keep his job is easily backed into a corner and is willing to do what it takes to stay employed. Blame management for creating the culture where this can happen and also for their willingness to look the other way.

Do we care? I'm sure ALL of the German companies are probably involved in some type of backhand dealings to meet the tough US standards.

A) no they aren't, just VAG, and
B) that's not a valid excuse anyway.

You're right. We should turn a blind eye to criminal lawlessness.

You reap what you sow...actions have consequences. There is enough guilt to go around at all levels of VW management and work force. Some however will be punished more than others both fairly and unfairly. Bad actions such as these (GM, Toyota, Takata et al) make it that much more difficult for all companies in all industries. I hope VW get all they deserve and more.

so the execs..did not do their job by managing their engineers...incompetence from execs are grounds for prison.
