SPIED: Audi's All-New Q5 Spotted AGAIN Doing Winter Testing
When I look at Audi's product portfolio, I am seeing vehicles that are starting to get past their prime. Some more so than others.

There's good news, however. The company will be bringing us some all-new metal.

First, we start off with the Audi Q7 sport-utility vehicle. Think of that as the product that sets the tone. Following that up is the all-new A4. While it may look awfully similar to the outgoing product, it's been completely revamped. We're expecting its driving dynamics to improve significantly.

Next up is anyone's guess. Perhaps it will be the all-new Q5 SUV. It's definitely long in the tooth and we're looking forward to the four rings bringing something that makes things competitive.

Seen in these all-new snaps, the Q5 is camouflaged head to toe. While it makes seeing the details quite difficult, it appears to have grown a bit in size to match vehicles like the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class.

That's very much a matter of perspective. I see everybody and their uncle jumping on the Styling Trend Du Jour: sharp body creases, overly stylized headlights, "angry bird" faces, a flurry of trapezoids, more flat sheet metal or grotesquely swoopy. And in the interior, gadgets galore and a stripped down dash that has frequently accessed functionality buried deep inside a screen/menu/button/dial user interface that's horrible for real-time interaction.

To *my* eyes, the 2013-2016 Q5's styling swims against the current tide of sameness. I feel it's classically beautiful, like a Porsche Cayenne or Porsche Mecan. It's also one of Audi's hottest sellers, running neck and neck with the A4. My big criticism of today's Q5s (being an owner) is the screen/menu/button/dial user interface that's horrible for real-time interaction.

We'll see if the "Q7 direction," when applied to the Q5, results in increased popularity or decreased.

Yearly sales

A4 / 45K units
Q5 / 53.5K units

The Q5 handily outsells the A4

The "new" Q5 will look like the old Q5. Speed the implosion!

The 2017 MY Q5 is a complete redesign, inside and out. Just like the new 2016 MY Q7.
