For some folks, a big part of attaining is to have other people know it. Some call this "being an attention whore."

The TV show "South Park" has an excellent episode about this characteristic (called "The F word", Season 13, Episode 12, first aired November 4, 2009) in which Harley riders ride loud bikes and make a lot of noise to draw attention to themselves, believing they're "cool."

Ancient Chinese saying, in reference to martial arts masters: "A strong man has no need to flex his muscles."

Just to quash misunderstanding in the bud, I do *NOT* assert that all, or even the majority of exotic car owners fall into the category of desiring to draw attention to themselves.

"A strong man has no need to flex his muscles."

That's because everyone knows he is strong. But how do they know?... :)

atc98092 asks "...but how do they know?"

In the days of old, a Shaolin Monk (and others) would also learn physical disciplines (Kung Fu in this example, specifically). By virtue of being a Shaolin Monk, a member of a specific monastic order, people would know the monk is also trained in the martial arts. Similarly, if an American sees a Marine officer in uniform walking down the street, they would reasonably conclude that he's very physically fit and trained in hand-to-hand combat without the need for said Marine to flex his muscles to show his strength.

I use this quote to draw a parallel between the Shaolin Monk, who knows his own capabilities and therefore has no need to broadcast to others, and a person who likes themselves, is confident, and has a solid and healthy sense of self-esteem, and therefore does not require validation from others. I contrasti that to someone who might own an exotic car or a Harley motorcycle with loud pipes, and who seeks validation (via admiration or envy) from others by way of bringing attention to themselves with "see what I got?" displays.

Steve,

Sorry, I was merely being playful: "they rev it up."

I guess it wasn't funny...

London liberals ultimate goal is to one day ban all private cars from the inner city. First a congestion tax. Now this. They just keep chipping away until its not worth entering the city.

Go pound your pug. All cites have noise abatement laws that should be enforced. Regardless of what you vocal grey/white matter absent, smokestack sucking, right wingnuts believe, not everything is politics.
