Google Driverless Technology Slapped In The Face By New California Rules Requiring Controls And Driver in Car

Google says it's "gravely disappointed" by proposed rules from California regulators that would restrict the use of driverless cars and would ban them from traveling on public roads in the state without a licensed human driver aboard.

The proposal from the California Department of Motor Vehicles would require all driverless cars to have a steering wheel and pedals and a human driver with an "autonomous vehicle operator certificate" to take control of the car if necessary

Apparently having no at fault accidents is a bad thing...lets let the human back in control.

Why? Computers are already better at it than most people. I know you think you're hot shit when it comes to driving, but if you could get over yourself for like a minute you'd see it makes far more sense to move towards public transportation in the form of driverless low-occupancy vehicles, especially in sprawling, mostly-suburban population centers.

It may be difficult to imagine a future where getting from point A to point B is as simple as walking up to a pod station, getting into a car/pod/whatever, and having it take you where you want while you check your mail or read the news or work on something or even take a nap. But that future will come. Whether it comes to the US at the same time as other progressive countries, is an open question. We can't even get high-speed rail properly funded and built.

Cali's rules requiring licensed human operators in all driverless vehicles is about as stupid as requiring every group traveling on a subway to include a licensed train conductor. Zero added safety for 1000% added inconvenience and barriers to meaningful progress.
