CARS WARS! Entry-Level Luxury Battle Royale: BMW 3-Series vs. Jaguar XE vs. Lexus IS200t vs. Mercedes C-Class
While there's been a clear shift in the luxury market towards sport-utility vehicles, entry-level sedans are still selling well. If you're a young professional who's looking to celebrate an initial success, likely you'll be finding yourself behind the wheel of one the following vehicles:

- BMW 3-Series;
- Lexus IS; and,
- the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

With the launch of the all-new Jaguar XE, that could throw a wrench into some plans though. Only one way to find out as an Australian publication put all four into the ring for an epic battle royale.

Although we'd love to give you the FULL context of the verdict, we're here to get right to the point. Simply put, the Jaguar and Lexus are nice picks but can't best the Germans in terms of comfort or driving dynamics. Not to mention interior design, which is considered.

Where does the decision go from here? Well, it's — more or less — up to you: if you want comfort, go for the Mercedes, if you'd like better dynamics, the BMW's your auto.

Verdict

...

But neither is quite sufficient to overtake the BMW or the Benz. Which of this remaining pair is best? Well that depends on which question you most need answered.

...

The Stuttgart marque’s entry is also the cushiest here in urban duties — at least on the Airmatic system — and let’s never underestimate the importance of its ‘driveway appeal’, given it still looks supreme from most angles.

...

The Bimmer also remains the absolute benchmark for balancing ‘sports’ and ‘premium’. Its steering is the second-best here, but in any other handling metric it reigns supreme. The addition of adjustable dampers also makes it more comfortable than ever before.

The Mercedes, then, makes an immediate impact. But the BMW grows on you, and if we’re valuing highly a car’s dynamic nous here, then you might reasonably argue that this latest update makes it the pick in this very specific context. Were it a test of different spec levels, the result may well have been different. The Germans reign.

No A4? No Cadillac ATS? No Genesis? The former are in the class and the latter is in the price point.

I'm far from a Mercedes fan, but of the vehicles mentioned, by far the Mercedes.

Again - these may be Premium small sports sedans - but they are NOT Luxury cars.

Of the cars mentioned - only the C-class was re-positioned towards the Luxury car area - instead of pure performance. Mercedes actually questioned potential buyers and found that many of them wanted a Luxury ride and luxury appointments in the interior instead of the progressively rock harder chassis that some of them had. So - they actually produced a car that the people wanted to buy - and do not have enough capacity to produce all they could sell. And then Mercedes left the "sports" to AMG.

Car wars is Australian - I do not know how the ATS sells there.

With the 1/2-er, CLA-Class and A3, are the 3,C,IS,etc. still considered entry level?

Might be one of the better-written articles I've seen in a while. Very well-balanced and the writer understands the intended mission of each car, i.e., luxury vs. sporty intentions.

He's spot-on on a couple of other things as well. The Lexus absolutely has the best seats, Mercedes the best interior, and the BMW the overall, best-balanced driving experience (though I'm not familiar with the 330i engine).

The Jag and BMW definitely need to work on their interiors (though it's a bit disappointing for Jag since this is a brand new model). But I will say, though I was critical of the Jag's all-too-familiar styling, it's grown on me and may be my favorite in this class.

My choice would be Benz and Lexus....i rate comfort then driving!

Both Jag and Bmw are POS...with a fancy nameplate.

The Lexus is the oldest design and still does well...

Apparently, Autospies readers are a bunch of geriatrics!! I'll take the driving machine over the magic carpet ride Mercedes (and Lexota and Jagutata) and have more smiles per mile. Performance is everything; the rest is just background noise.
