CAR WARS! Practical Supercar Edition: Audi R8 V10 Plus vs. Porsche 911 Turbo S
With the last-gen Audi R8 and Porsche 911 it was a close call, sort of. When it comes to putting a practical, daily driver supercar in your garage it is a pretty ferocious battle between these two.

That's because they're both easy to drive around town, have similar luxury accoutrements and can be nasty performers when you want them to be.

Now with both products in an all-new generation, it only makes sense to put them both on the track and give them a shakedown to determine which is the king of the castle.

See which supercar gets the "W" around the track, below!

We test the brand new 2015 Audi R8 V10 Plus against the Porsche 911 Turbo S to find out which is fastest on track.

I used to love the Audi R8. I ached for one. I loved the styling, inside and out, the less costly and more-than-enough-power-for-Steve V8. Then Audi got rid of the styling guys who knew how to do curves. Now, their exteriors are designed by guys who use rulers. Perhaps they honed their skills in engineering creative new forms for cardboard gift boxes. Meh.

The V8 was something. Bassy and, really, a nasty sounding eight-cylinder auto.

Though I liked the first-gen's design too, I did find it a bit boring to drive after a bit.

Now a 911 with a sport exhaust and a standard gearbox, I can have fun for days.

The problem I had with the first R8 was that vertical blotch on the side and the fact that if you had one, everyone knew you were driving the uglier, badge-engineered version of the Lamborghini Gallardo and that was probably because you could not afford the real thing. The new R8 is dull looking.

Though in the slippery conditions, the R8 every so slightly beats the Porsche, I'd take the Porsche and that's coming from a card-carrying Porsche detractor.

Lot's a stuff in this note. I want to comment on the Lambo/Audi comparison, re 'the real thing.'

People viewing the Lambo and Audi that way are, IMO, poseurs. They simply don't understand cars. While there are plenty of people like that out there, I'd avoid generalizing.

Why?

These automobiles are completely different with but some mechanical elements borrowed from each other. Their set-ups are different. Their intended use is different. More importantly, their target audiences, I suspect, are complementary. (Same comment would apply to the Plus vs. the TTS)

Moreover, if you're spending $200k+ on a new car like the R8 V10 Plus, two things are clear. First, you have assets. Second, you can afford the other.

At that point, it becomes a matter of personal preference and purpose.

Again, not everyone purchasing these cars are true enthusiasts but I wouldn't generalize and state that the R8 is the cheap edition of the Lambo, especially not when referring to the Plus or GT versions.

R8 = Audi Fiero

It has ZERO gravitas.
