CAR WARS! Sibling Rivalry Edition — Is The Porsche 911 GT3 RS TWICE The Car Of The Cayman GT4?
Since the launch of the Porsche Cayman GT4, it's continued making buyers, critics and everyone in between question whether the 911 range is worth the extra cost. Well, this may help solve that a bit more.

The most extreme all-new 911 on the market right now is the rather bananas GT3 RS. Though I haven't driven it, the word on the street is that it's really a race car that got OK'd for street use. Usually when people say that it's an exaggeration. That's not the case here.

The Cayman GT4, on the other hand, is built for track duty but I am confident most buyers will keep them on the streets. With 385 horsepower it's not quite as buff as the 911 but we're sure it'll make up for that with its dynamic handling characteristics.

But rather than get philosophical, let's just get down to brass tacks: Who lapped Silverstone faster?

Ask and ye shall receive! Steve Sutcliffe gives both Porsches a workout in the clip below.

Can the mind blowing Porsche Cayman GT4 live with its bigger, more expensive brother, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, on track? Watch as Steve Sutcliffe finds out on the famous Silverstone National Circuit...

Steve is a great driver and good at what he does now; sell reviews. And while the RS is quite raw for a road car by today's standards, it's not a cup car. Not even close. It's probably a better car and certainly a lot more civilized but it's not a race car.

That said, it's the best car I've ever driven. Bar none.

As for the GT4, well, it's clearly Porsche's best deal ever... But is the RS worth 2X the GT4? Steve doesn't answer that question but I'd say the RS is worth a lot more than that.

But that's just me.

For me, the Cayman is more of what the 911 should be and I'd rather be in a Cayman at the track than the overwrought Super Beetle. The Cayman is easily Porsche's best vehicle.

I'm just back from a TVR run through the bay area in TVRs running RMF plates. The rolling 55mph TVRs doing backfires over the Richmond/San Rafael bridge was priceless.

The TVRs made an impression at the wineries.

The Cayman is Porsche's sports car, and the 911 is largely at very sporty GT. With models like the GT3 it returns to a sports car, but the fundamental superiority of the Cayman's layout cannot be ignored. Porsche could easily blow away the GT3 by adding some more power to the GT4, but, as before, that'll never happen. The Cayman is the way to go, from base model through the GT4, in nearly all cases compared with the 911 Coupe versions - badge snobbery aside.

Is the GT3 twice the car of the Cayman GT4. Of course not. If Porsche gave the Cayman even 60 extra horsepower and stickier rubber it would probably equal if not beet the GT3 on that track. They were 3 seconds apart. The GT3 had 100 extra HP and a PDK tranny. If the Cayman GT4 had PDK it might have knocked 1.5 seconds off it's lap time. But we know Porsche will never allow this to happen.
