The second-gen X1 will get an expanded range, as the Bavarians apparently registered a patent for the long-wheel-base variant.

After introducing a front-wheel-drive layout for the first time in its SUVs, it looks like it has a few more tricks up its sleeve for its compact crossover to increase its clientele.

Chinese love their vehicles to be spacious at the rear so BMW’s latest patents, published by
PCauto.com, indicate that the LWB X1 is first and foremost targeted at the world's largest market.

It's actually BMW's tardy response to the HUGE sales success Mercedes is having in China with the B and R Class models, apparently can't make enough of them for the Chinese and has ordered the Alabama plant to begin exporting R Classes directly to China.

BMW's late but will definitely have buyers as well over there

In related news BMW announces the X1 SWB, X1 NWB, X1 Cabriolet, X1 Sedan, and X1 Wagon. All available in FWD and AWD configurations with standard tri-wheel configuration or 4 wheels!

Did you bother reading the article? This apparently is for the Chinese market, where plenty of buyers are asking for it. The Germans have been building LWB versions of compact/medium-sized cars for years, to cater to the Chinese market.

An LWB X1 would make sense for The States as well.

I would consider it but its would then basically the same size as an X3 but a few inches shorter.
