SPIED: BEST Spy Shot Of The All-New, Next-Gen BMW 5-Series Snapped! What Are YOUR First Impressions?
With the all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Volvo S90 arriving in short order, it looks like midsize luxury sedans like the Audi A6, BMW 5-Series and Lexus GS are starting to be a bit...long in the tooth.

Thankfully, some are not sitting on their hands as other manufacturers are rushing to innovate and deliver best-in-breed products.

While some seriously covered up next-gen 5-Series' have been spotted, the wraps are starting to come off. In a spy pic snapped this week in Germany, a Twitter user — @der_petermann — captured the BEST shot of the next-gen 5-Series yet.

Below we've enhanced the original picture and then we made sure to give you a closer look at the all-new 5'er. While it is a touch grainy, it is easy to see that this is clearly not the all-new 7. It has different headlights, has smaller proportions and a different hood. But, overall, it's clear that the all-new 5-Series will NOT be an revolution but an evolution.

We assume the interior will mimic the all-new 7 and boast many of the same, innovative technology.

What's your first impression from what YOU can see?

Meet the new 5 same as the old 5! The only attractive Bangle-era vehicle was the 5 Series and all the rest were road-going tumors on wheels, but the Bangle 5 was pretty darned good. Since then the Camry oops I mean 5 Series has become unimaginatively dull.

Matt, you're killing me.

The E60 5-Series was tragic, inside and out. Total abomination.

It ONLY looked "meh" in 550i Sport trim and it was sub-part at best.

The problem with most BMW models today is that while they have advanced technically - their exterior styling is so derivative that they all look OLD. It is time for BMW (And Cadillac) to step up to the plate with styling that is clearly newer - in some tangible way. After years of arts and science - the Cadillacs now look like they are from ten years ago. And the Bimmers look even older. Mercedes has mastered the ability to restyle their cars so that they look different enough from the previous models - yet still look like a Mercedes - and look newer at the same time. Audi has a 5 year old styling their cars - they all look alike - and have for years. Rolls may be able to get away with this - because of their low numbers- but the premiums from Germany cannot any longer - they are being attacked from new places now. Think Genesis - Jaguar - Alfa - as well as Cadillac.

@Agent00R V10 enough said. The 5 series since then has been a massive let down.

@Matt

Who cares about the V10? It sounded pretty good but that was about it. With the pretty awful SMG gearbox and two power modes — why do I want TWO power modes in a high-performance car that should be giving me 10/10ths ALWAYS — it was stunningly overengineered in a BAD way. And, don't forget, it looked hideous.

I don't disagree with you that there's been a downward slide here but I think it most certainly starts with the E39 being the last great one. The F-Series is a big improvement over the E60.

The V10 was able to transform the 5 into something wonderful.

Tacking on a new front- and rear-end to the same middle box probably won't hurt the 5 Series much. It's current sales remain strong and it looks appropriate for its class. Unlike the 7 Series which doesn't look as much of a flagship as the S-Class, and its sales are suffering accordingly.
That being said, I think the new E will have a greater impact for Mercedes with styling inside and out that at least distinguishes it from the current model and makes people know that they've purchased something fresh and new.

@cidflekken vis a vis the 5 Series the incentives will increase and profit margins decrease.

Genesis need a slogan. Might I suggest "Genesis, the best reason NOT to buy an A6 or a 5 Series."

let's just hope the driving dynamics are at least as good as the E39 was without any electronic do-dads

Will be tough to do that with electric power assisted steering and quite a bit more weight.

Not digging the headlights or front end, if following the design of the 7-series. I think BMW has designated the 5 and 7 Series as "executive"/family sedans and will use the VFL design elements on the 6 and 9 Series: Coupe and Gran Coupe.
