G70 To Be First Genesis N Model To Take On The Performance Sedan Market

The long-awaited Hyundai range of N Performance models will stretch to the Korean brand’s newly established luxury arm, Genesis – and the most likely candidate will be the new G70 sedan.

Hyundai North America reaffirmed the name of the new model that will rival the highly successful Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the likes of the Lexus IS, Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, labelling the car the “G70 sport sedan” during a presentation to global media.

The newly-created Genesis brand – which was announced as part of the reveal of the new S-Class-sized G90 model ahead of that car’s debut at the Detroit auto show this week – will include go-fast N models in a move that seemingly blurs the lines even further between the two marques.

In one respect, I'm looking forward to this car. I've always said, if Hyundai built a 3-Series-sized Genesis sedan with the existing powertrain, they'd have a real contender.
My fear is that it will have styling as mundane as the G90, but hopefully it will follow more of the lines of the current Genesis, but with a bit more emotion and more original theme. The other fear is that it will have a pretty ordinary interior. So, we'll see.

Cadillac has already produced a car that can compete in performance with the 3 series - and actually beat them in some cases. Infiniti once did the same. Neither company succeeded in actually selling a lot of them though. WHy - because Premium cars are not just their parts and performance - they are also their heritage and their "class" - and Hyundai has NONE of that. The difference will be how LOW Hyundai prices its cars compared to the competition - if it is low enough - they will attract the people who cannot actually afford the "real thing". Will they actually compete - nope.

The key for Genesis is to build an all-around competitor. Not just a great handler like the ATS and IS, both of which handle well but don't have engines to compete and have limited rear seat space. The Infiniti used to handle as well but wasn't refined. Right now, the 3 and C seem to balance sport, luxury, space, style and refinement the best in the segment. The A4 will no doubt handle the sport, luxury, space, and refinement part, just not so sure about style.

The problem with the ATS is that nothing about it is a Cadillac. Cadillacs should have names and not alphanumeric bullspit. Cadillacs used to have commanding styling. The ATS is Camry bland.

Cadillac needs a reinvention.

Genesis just needs to get rolling and do heavy marketing with excellent leases. My brother-in-law's first car was an E Class. He traded it for the first generation Genesis R Spec and loved it. He now has a current Genesis. He is as snooty-rich country club as you can get, but he swims against the tide. I suspect he will want to see the G70.

My buddies at the country club aren't going to be impressed by my Hyundai, even if it is the coveted "N" version.

The cars my work peers drive in my organization consist of a 5 Series, A6, Grand Cherokee Limited, ML, and a Volvo XC60. One other guy drives a 2015 Genisis and gets crap for it all the time.

and that's because all the rest are bigoted snobs.

That's because who would spend that much money on something from Korea (aka wannabe Germany) when you can get an actual German car from Germany even if its a class smaller.

Back in the day no one used to buying a Benz or BMW was going to buy a fancy Toyota with a strange new name either.

That fancy Toyota was Lexus.
