Honda Develops Advanced VTEC Engine

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. has further advanced its VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control System) technology with the development of the Advanced VTEC engine, which achieves high performance along with outstanding fuel economy and lower emissions. The new engine combines continuously variable valve lift and timing control with the continuously variable phase control of VTC (Variable Timing Control). Honda plans to release a production vehicle equipped with the new engine within three years.

This new system permits optimum control over intake valve lift and phase in response to driving conditions, achieving improved charging efficiency for a significant increase in torque at all engine speeds. Under low to medium load levels, the valves are set for low lift and early closure to reduce pumping losses and improve fuel economy.

In combination with optimized intake components, these advances in control technology result in world-class dynamic performance along with approximately 13 percent* improvement in fuel economy. The new engine is also exceptionally clean, with exhaust emissions that meet both U.S. Environmental Protection Agency LEV2-ULEV regulations and Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport requirements for Low-Emission Vehicles, with emission levels 75 percent lower than those required by the 2005 standards (based on Honda calculations).

Honda is one of the premier combustion engine engineering companies and they've done it again. It is an engineering feat to be able to increase power in conjunction with feul economy as well as making the motor cleaner burning. Honda already has on average the cleanest burning and the most efficient motors in the world. They sell vehicles primarily on their merits, not with fancy marketing, or huge cash promotions.

Now in true recent Honda tradition, they ought to design a generic looking, FRONT WHEEL DRIVE, car that is loaded with electronic gizmos and stick this new engine in it and watch as NOBODY NOTICES.

Honda Corporation is somehow completely blind to what the consumer of the performance sedan demand. An EIGHT CYLINDER engine with TORQUE. All this high tech business is great and will probably do just fine in a car like the civic or maybe even the Accord and will likely further improve the fuel economy and further decrease the emissions from an already good level.....but it is unlikely to do much to increase the sales of their poorly received RL. Also, other than the low torque, hi revving S2000, that one has to beat like a filthy rug to get any power out of, there are no rear wheel drive, driver oriented cars in the Honda line up. They are focused on the Civic crowd and from what I see as their offerings to the public they are looking for mass, economical and cheap [=spirit less]transport.

What a shame. What a shame indeed from the only Japanese Auto maker to have a great history of F1 racing and success. The first Japanese car company to make the first true Exotic [NSX] and in fact the first Japanese maker to enter the Luxury car segment with the Acura brand [ that came before Lexus and Infinity].

This is called Advanced Vtec. and it will debut within three years. iVtec is old news, this is a new system because they were comparing it to the current iVtec system in 2.4l engine by Honda.

Why do you have to make fun of Honda's? Too good for a Civic because you drive your daddy's cadi? Hmm. Uneccesary comments like that will get heat from me.

I would never buy a Civic but you have to face the facts. Their economical and very practical for a daily commute. Their cars aren't gas guzzlers and for that it's good enough for their consumers.

Also not everyone's parents can afford a cadillac, or any premium brand so that's what they're given. I hate it when people put down 'civic' drivers or call them fart machines. Funny thing is if their tuned right they can kill a lot of cars (even the supercars). So i guess they will fart in your face.

Grow up will ya?

Perhaps you own an Accord now but once owned a civic. Now you're in denial that you were once thinking you're an F1 driver. LOL. Dumbo

Blah Honda knocked off the old VTEC system from BMW.
All Honda did is promote it by putting on the side of their vehicle DOHC VTEC..

I love Honda.
From my push lawnmower to my riding lawnmower to my wife's Odyssey van and my S2000 and NSX, I am a Honda guy top to bottom. But that fact does not blind me to the fact that Honda has lost its focus on building spirited cars. I hope they will hear their engineers more and let go of their bean counters that are destroying their fine image.

How many people know that Ferrari's F1 successes of late have been achieved on the backs of the Honda engineers who left Honda and brought their talent where it was appreciated. Honda needs to get back to it's roots. As I said, it is a shame.

as i recall, honda OWNED f1 racing a little while ago.

when they quit for other venues, they sold some of their technology to ferrari. (i didn't know honda engineers also joined the ferrari team.)

Honda has had VTEC since the late 80's, well before BMW. What BMW uses is VANOS, which is strictly timing control and the new Valvtronic system is limited by its capability to rev. What Honda's trying to do is give the consumer a motor that revs like a formula one car, but has better low end torque. Because of the pushrod motors that we grew up with, we are used to low end torque. Just an illustration as to how good Honda/Acura is, in Oct. 05 C&D, the Acura TL with 258 hp had the exact same 0-60 time (5.9sec.) as the 298 hp G35 even though the G35 had a small weight advantage.

their reply: "In Japan."
