Will Cadillac's CT6 Flagship Place It On The Same Level As The Germans?

Will Cadillac's CT6 Flagship Place It On The Same Level As The Germans?
We all grow up at some point, and it’s hard to think of a 113-year-old brand as lacking maturity. But Cadillac’s rebirth a decade ago remains a work in progress.

Edgy, angular sheet metal has established a unique styling language for respected vehicles like the ATS, CTS and SRX, and driving dynamics have gotten better with each successive model. The popular and pricey Escalade helps pay the bills.

But to be taken seriously in the luxury market requires a flagship model that showcases advanced technology, stout and quiet engines, great ride and handling, unassailable build quality, first-rate comfort and sharp looks. The Germans figured out this formula long ago, followed by Lexus.

What is wrong with this segment? CT6, Continental, G90, all duller than Keanu Reeves' acting. That being said, the Continental is more successful at defining/re-defining American luxury and may just run away with all the sales. The CT6 will likely drive better, but those looking for large luxo barges wouldn't know or care about the differences.

And why is it looking so cramped inside?

Is the heading a question or a statement?

Shouldn't it be: "Looky, looky, hooky, hooky! - Cadillac just introduced the new CT6 DO YOU think its got the guts and balls to complete with the Germans?"

Oh, forgot to answer - HELL NO!!

Hahahaha that is the same thing I was thinking!

Lexus has a hard enough time trying to position the LS just right, Cadillac will have to offer this thing for generations and make substantial improvements each generation to even been taken remotely seriously.

Is this news? Aren't these photos a year old, from the NY Auto show?

We're talking about the car so we used our photos from the launch. This is an opinion story, not a news story.

I doubt the Cadillac will compete with the Germans, but I can say they've already one upped the new Continental by making the V8 available. It won't be a v series but there will be a V8.

Agreed, TauronB2G. At least based on Cadillac's recent attempts, it takes more than raw power or inspired handling to be "on par" with the Germans, Lexus, Jaguar. It takes a whole package in addition to loads of intangibles and that's what Cadillac has been missing.

Looks like a funeral car. The interior is straight out of the 1990's.
Cadillac must be doing drugs, big time to produce this whale.

yes the interior looks like a blast from a 90s STS past.

I"ll let this review answer that question.

That's certainly a strong review. This may be the car Cadillac finally needs to get back on track. Too bad its styling may be its most negative aspect.

Interior is easily the worse of them all.

If you have to ask, then the answer is no. When it's actually on par with the German luxury brands, then there will be no question, no debate.

Personally, I don't know if it's a good thing to try to compete with the German luxury brands, or whether it's better to pull a Lexus, define your own identity and value statement, without going directly up against the German brands. To each his own.

How do you know it's not on par? Reviews are very positive. Have you driven it?

Cadillac is already as good as the Germans dynamically and better in reliability. The problem with Cadillac is that they are (1) style-free, (2) overpriced, (3) wrongly sized, and (4) saddled with alphanumeric vomit for names.

They need a gorgeous new styling language. The ATS and CTS need to be replaced with a named vehicle of the CTS' size at the ATS' price.

The CT6 needs an emergency reskin to rid it of its 10-years-ago look, a name, and a CTS price.

The CT6 will be DOA. We're not seeing interest in it.

I think the CT6 does have a real chance for one reason - It is much like the original CTS - in that it is sized closer to the next class larger - but it is priced to compete with a SMALLER german class of cars. It is the original cadillac formula that led to reasonable sales of their first Arts and Science success. In fact - It was my opinion that Cadillac should re-price its other two sedans - the ATS and CTS to compete that same way - the ATS with the CLA - and the CTS close to the 3/C class. THat way - instead of offering the smallest cars in the class - Cadillac WOULD BE offering the largest cars in the class.

While that might not sell in Europe - where the cars don't sell anyway - it will sell in China and the USA - where size is a big part of the sales equation. And when compared to a 5/E class car - the CT6 WILL appear to be big, strong - and unapologeticly American.

THe real question is - whether the CT6 has comparable room inside to meet the Lincoln Continental - which has a cavernous rear seat area. THe Lincoln - in the same price category as the CT6 - will be competition simply because it looks so good. However - in person - the CT6 - especially its interior - looks a lot better than the pictures indicate - because its proportions make it look smaller than it is in pictures.

Nice pontificating @TomM, but we have NO deposits for the CT6 but nice amount for the Continental. The CT6 is Cimarron wrong.

Sorry - @MDarringer - but the CT6 is released in the market in china this week and is in current production. Deposits don't mean a thing - until cars are actually produced. I still believe that when compared to a BMW 5 series - which is its price range - the CT6 - for an american buyer - will be perceived as a better buy - it certainly is larger - and the 5-class is Ho-Hum

@TomM you clearly know nothing about the car sales business. Informed customers OFTEN put down deposits on cars they want. And that interest is potentially indicative of a car's popularity. The Continental has a lot if buzz around it. The CT6 not a peep.

Actually - My brother had a Lincoln Dealership for years - and I owned his facility - so I do indeed have knowledge - now - WHERE are you getting YOUR figures as to the number of deposits put down on the Lincoln VS the Cadillac - I have yet to see ANY published from a reliable source - and BOTH have them.

Cadillac vehicles need to be big, strong, unapologetic, and need to feel special. They don't have to aim for the precision of the Japanese nor the handling of the German. And they have to be made in the US.

If not just sell it to the Chinese and spare us all the misery.
