Great Scott! Delorean Roaring Back To The Future With Limited Production Run

Fans of Back to the Future wont have to travel back in time to purchase a new DeLorean DMC-12.

DeLorean Motor Co. plans to start producing 300 replica models of the gull-wing two-door car by March 2017, according to Vice President James Espey.

“There’s a long-term business here, as there has been for the last 30 years,” he told The Detroit News Thursday during a phone interview. “It’s not just a movie prop. It’s something you can buy, own and drive.”

Epsey said the Humble, Texas-based company is currently in talks with several automakers to identify a suitable engine supplier for the replicas, which DeLorean Motor hopes to sell for $80,000 to $100,000.

The original DeLorean was a somewhat crappy car that got famous only because of its starring role in the "Back to the Future" trilogy. Today, it has a faithful following of fans that mod the car to look like the one(s) from the movie. Otherwise, it's just a weird curiosity.

I'm not confident that DeLorean can make lightning strike twice.

The stainless steel body was a dumb idea. If they ditched the stainless steel and went with panels that allow different colors, that would be good.

I've seen and ridden in a DeLorean and they really are quite ghastly in their build quality and yes I love TVRs despite their ghastly build quality because they are usually fast. The DMC12 does not know the meaning of fast.

So let's put in an Ecoboost V6 or some such motor. Is the chassis capable of handling the power?

My impression of my DeLorean encounter was that it promised way more than it delivered.

From what I remember, the major complaint with the cars was the lack of a powerplant that backed up the appearance. If they can but something more respectable in there, who knows? It's not like they are looking to build thousands of them each year.

If I had to choose between the DMC-12 or a De Tomaso Pantera at the time, I'd choose the Pantera. The only thing notable about the DMC-12, was that it was used in the Back to the Future franchise. It literally excelled at NOTHING.

Panteras were poorly engineered, but they can be "righted" fairly easily.
