RUMOR: Mercedes-Benz's All-New E-Class To Get New Engines In The Summer
So, when the 2016 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) happened this year Mercedes-Benz trotted out the all-new E-Class sedan. It was one of the bigger debuts in Motor City and there's a good reason for it.

People's interest in Mercedes is at an all-time high thanks to the success of its other products, and the E-Class is a volume selling vehicle for the three-pointed star.

But, I must admit, I wasn't tremendously happy to hear that the only available motor at launch will be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder. I despise four-cylinder engines.

The good news is that the E's mill will put out a respectable 240 plus horsepower and more than 270 lb.-ft. of torque.

According to the latest reports, Mercedes will be launching complementary engine options as well. Though the latest word says June, we know the U.S.-bound car will launch in the summer. I'd wager the other engines will come in two to three months post launch in The States.

Here's what's rumored to be in store:

- Another four-cylinder good for approximately 210 horsepower
- The launch motor, which is a four-cylinder pumping out 240+ horsepower
- An E400 that will produce over 330 horsepower
- Two diesel variants, the E200d and E220d — we expect the latter will make its way stateside
- Finally, the E63 and E63 S that are expected to range from the 570-620 horsepower range

IF these were YOUR choices, WHICH would you pick and WHY?

Let us know, Spies!

I've never understood the wisdom of a 2.0T in cars of this size and price. A 2.0T is fine for mainstream class brands, but a bit pedestrian for premium.

The new MB engines will be in-line (straight)six-cylinders.

An E400? Doesn't make sense. Why wouldn't they offer an E450 AMG with 362 hp, the same engine as the C450 AMG?

Well, just speculation, but the 400 motor found in the C400 and CLS400 is so damn smooth and delivers power everywhere you want it. I don't see the need for an AMG Sport model with its own dedicated motor and trimmings. Who's to say that they won't do an E450 AMG Sport though and up the boost so it puts out 400-420 hp?

I guess, because they believe that if you really want performance, you'll go for E63 right away, however, where is the E550 ?

I am thinking the E550 may be RIP.

Perhaps an E450 AMG Sport with more power — as noted above — would make sense?

Let's see what the next E-Class-related news items have to say...

I would never buy an E Class with the same mill the current C300. That 4 cyl is buzzy, I don't like it. My wifes GLK has the 3.5-6cyl w/302bhp and its strong with smooth power delivery. I just had a dealer loaner GLC 300 and again, I think that 4 is buzzy. In a car at the E Class level I just don't think its smooth enough, AND for that kind of money a 4 just seems to be the wrong choice. They need to retain that 3.5 until they have their full range ready. Its a wonderful engine and have had it in my last E350. So the new E comes w/a 4 cyl, and everything one would actually want on the car will be an option... I'm not sure I'm going back to Mercedes... Seems for $65K you should get leather, Nav, back up camera... and a better engine than a 4 cyl.
