The GREAT Debate: Was The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL
If I had to pick a category of my favorite automobiles, it would easily be exotics. Though it may be the childish or cliché choice, I have to say it's one that gets my blood going.

I have my reasons. First, supercars are always pushing boundaries from a technology stand point as well as design. Second, they're just so emotional. You haven't had an automotive experience until you've connected with an auto and today's all-new rides are tough to get attached to.

That being said, right now there's two automobiles that lay claim to being the world's first supercar.

1) The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL "Gullwing."

2) The Lamborghini Miura.

Any way you slice it, they're both exceedingly rare, worth a ton of coin and desirable for their own reason. Having said that, WHICH do YOU think was the world's FIRST supercar?

The Miura is the first "supercar" because it is the first car to be categorized and called a supercar. There is only one first no matter what went before. Would you call the NFL championship games before the first Super Bowl super bowl games...no.

I'd go with the Jaguar E-Type because it was a performance game changer and a styling masterpiece. The Miura is definitely in the ring though. The Mercedes is a great car and I have seen one up close and personal. It is indeed a magnificent car, but it stirs me not.

I don't know if I'd call it a supercar, but I'd certainly call it a noteworthy design that has stood the test of time. And that, to me, is much bigger deal than whether it could be labeled a supercar or not.

I would think that a Supercharged Duesenberg Model SJ - especially the 2 short wheelbase model SSJs - were likely to be the first supercars. THese cars had dual Overhead cam four valves per cylinder engines and could reach 140 MPH - when the very best cars of the era rarely made 100MPH. Their motto - "The only car that can pass a Duesenberg - is another Duesenberg".

Duesenbergs are works of art.
