Porsche Claims Tech Companies Need To Concentrate On Phones, Their Cars Are For REAL Drivers
Porsche purists may not like the way the company is going, what with turbochargers and hybrids about to rule the roost, but the fact is the company still has drivers in mind. It recently reaffirmed its commitment to manual transmissions and now Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has come out swinging against autonomous cars. "One wants to drive a Porsche by oneself. An iPhone belongs in your pocket, not on the road.” Blume made these comments in an interview with German newspaper Westfalen-Blatt.

Amen!!!!!!!!!! Wait a minute. Does this mean Porsche is going to drop antilock brakes, electric steering, computer controlled suspension, transmission, engine, instruments etc and return to pure mechanical normally aspirated driving cars that real drivers covet. Didn't think so!

I applaud Porsche for not jumping on the autonomous car IDIOCY.

Agreed - with both of you.

Too many (major) tech companies seem to think that have the solution for the next-best type of vehicle....as if all these other legendary & historical "fly-by-night" operations - either in US, UK, Europe, Asia, etc - hadn't been thinking about the future as well.

If the financial/business reasons were abundant, the world would have seen these alternate propulsion vehicles a while ago. And all this drama is just another way for these publicly traded tech firms to assert themselves within an industry that'll be around for many more decades. They figure that since their customers can't live without their mobile devices, then they'll find a way to integrate their products into the auto industry so automakers will have to partner to include "must-have" in-car tech.

I appreciate Apple, Windows, & Android OS for their separate set of tech advances. But all these systems do is add to driver distractions & unnecessarily increase the basic costs of vehicle ownership & maintenance & insurance.

For the most part, I LOVE the Porsche approach, look, and ergonomics. However, the latest spy shots suggest that even Porsche is caving into the trend-du-jour, and getting rid of switches by moving their functionality to a computer screen :-(

I don't love tech. I love GOOD tech!

Sure, keep taking shots at Apple, let's see how that turns out in the future.

Apple vs Porsche...that would be an interesting industry battle.

But I always tend to believe that a consumer would prefer a Porsche for the driving dynamics & exterior design. Interior content such as instrument panel & center entertainment console would be a secondary consideration. Overall passenger comfort would be considered after design & tech. Form over function might win here bcuz...well it's a Porsche.

Apple's argument may include their sales data saying that younger affluent drivers prefer their interior tech options as much as the brand heritage.

Yeah right :-) I guess that's why Porsche offers hybrid technology, SUV, CUV, 4-door sedans, etc. If people that shell out $100K - $150K for cars tell Porsche they want to sit on a phone to go to work, Porsche will make them, period.
