CAR WARS! The Dearly Departed Edition: Are You MORE Sad About The Death Of Scion Or Saab?
The past decade hasn't been tremendously kind to the automotive industry. THINK: How many recalls, bad products, scandals and companies folding has the industry endured?

It's pretty remarkable. If we had a white board it would truly be astounding to list them all out.

To us though we've done a bit of thinking and we were curious. Of two of the dearly departed, WHICH automaker are you going to miss more? Scion or Saab?

Scion was the baby sibling of Toyota that was known for spitting out affordable, quirky vehicles. Though the company's run was short, we're sure many will remember the tC coupe. Its last vehicle that received praise was the all-new iM.

Saab, on the other hand, was known for its quirky autos that were luxury inspired. Having had their hey day in the 1980s and 1990s, it was quite a fall from grace. The last product that received positive notes was the 9-5 that lived a very short life.

Having said all of that, we're curious: WHICH brand are you more sad about losing? Scion or Saab?

Who or who?

Many, many years ago, SAAB was designed by engineers who did quirky things, but with purpose. For example, the ignition key was on the center console, south of the shifter. Stupid? It was encased in a steel box to make it resistant to hot-wiring. SAAB used to have an impossibly tight turning radius so you could do a U-turn in a street rather than a 3-point turn, and other pleasant surprises.

Once GM took over, it became just another brand, and lost the positive characteristics that made SAAB appealing to some. Today, few people will miss either brand disappearing.

Nice revisionist nonsense. When GM took over they inherited the 900 at the end of its life cycle which itself was a mildly restyled 99 at the end of its life cycle. The other SAAB was the stupidly dull 9000 that at heart was a Fiat/Lancia with all the attendant crapstormification.

SAAB was the Eagle of Europe and it needed to die.

SAAB by a mile. Its unfortunate that the Chinese who have bought Volvo and allowed the Swedes to be Swedes didn't also buy SAAB. Before GM SAAB's were engineering marvels, quirky with lots of character. There was life after Ford for Volvo...sadly not for SAAB after GM.

And the XC90 is selling at a trickle and that is most likely due to its stupid pricing. Volvo is not out of the woods. The XC90 is a nice-ish replacement for the doddering old one, but it's nothing special. They are charging BMW/Mercedes prices for a near-premium brand. Volvo was never--and never will be--on the same level as Mercedes...aside from pricing that is.

PUG, agreed. Volvo is getting a lot of positive exposure these days. The XC90 is gaining traction and attention, and the SC90 seems to be resonating with a lot of people (though I find it completely unappealing). January was a competitive month for the XC90, selling 2375 units vs 3515 for the GLE, 2584 for the X5, and 2336 for the brand new and previous Q7.

I will miss the Saab 9-3 Viggen with Rescue Kit. I wanted an '03, 4 door, 5speed, in blue, so bad back in 2007.

I say good riddance to both. When GM bought SAAB it was in a precarious situation with outdated cars and it went downhill from there. Even appealing to vegans didn't work.

What's a Scion?

Saab still makes cars? I think Scion could survive on its on, a lot of people like those little cars. They can drop the price and to be a sub 15k purchase and they would be ok. Toyota put it in direct competition of the Corolla, Civic, etc. It didn't stand a chance.

Saab by far. Their quirkiness the most

pretty sure Scion is only dying by name but products were to be kept and offered as Toyotas, no? So it's just the name ending...
