CAR WARS! Small Luxury SUV Comparo — BMW X3 vs. Land Rover Discovery Sport vs. Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class
One of the more hotly contested classes right now is the luxury sport-utility vehicle segment. That's because buyers, once again, have been lured in by the prospect of cheap fuel as well as roomier vehicles.

They say if we don't learn from history we're doomed to repeat it, huh?

At this year's 2016 Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS), Agent 001 and I looked around the show floor and it's clear that the auto manufacturers are paying attention to this shift and are building products accordingly. Hell, we're sure our faithful MDarringer will chime in with what he's seen on his dealer lots. Buyers want SUVs and they want them now.

That said, Autocar put the all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class up against the BMW X3 and all-new Land Rover Discovery Sport.

I have to say that the results of this test were pretty surprising BUT something the automotive community isn't too keen speaking about. See what I mean by checking out the selected excerpts below:

...Without the costlier optional solutions – and minus the counter-intuitive selection of big rims – neither car tested here feels appropriately specced. Forced to make a choice between them on the day, I’d narrowly take the GLC, if only because its newness and aesthetic appeal better paper over the dynamic cracks than the older if leaner X3...

...Where its rivals shine in specific conditions, the Discovery feels ready for anything – not least the addition of two extra passengers and, lest we forget, the deeper, very occasional challenge of muddy stuff (where it is confidently superior).

The very fact that the GLC and X3 need careful finishing on their respective spec sheets only reinforces the impression that the Land Rover is the segment’s one can’t-miss, complete option.

So, given the choice, WHICH of the three luxury SUVs would YOU go home with? The Mercedes? The Land Rover? The BMW?

What say you, Spies?

And the winner is Lexus NX200t.....

LOL...I was thinking the same exact thing. Even not considering numbers, this debut SUV is selling quite well....Im sure Lexus has a few tricks up their sleeves for a future sales pushe (if needed or not) such as NX-F. No? :) Perhaps a NX coupe. When your net is over 200 billion...the skys are the limit, especially when anything you create just sends you further up the progressive latter.

Even without a high performance version, how dare they not consider the Lexus in the comparo. Please stop using the whole platform/chasis relationship to the RAV-4; not relative to the average buyer. 3K+ sales for the NX vs BMW's 2K for the X3

Oh well. Take into consideration the materials and engine choices used to create this vehicle. Now...consider how much Toyota is profiting. I think the others should tune in. BMW did!

I thought the NX competes with the likes of the Q1 and X1? Yes it is still aRAV4 with better materials. I like the new RX but keep that NX, Q1 and X1s, I would get a CRV or Highlander before any of them. The NX, Q1s and X1s is for badgewhores but the strategy is working.

The NX is just making everyone's point about LEXUS clearer. They can only have high volume sales on entry level "luxury" vehicles for people upgrading from Toyotas or Buicks. Now lets get that new LS on the market and see what happens.

The NX is between the X1 and X3, Just as the RX is between the X3 and X5. This is why the seem to be a value compared to the higher competition, but in reality, it is because they are an in between segment.

Out of these 3? I'd gladly take the Mercedes. Too bad that exact configuration wasn't available in North America when I was spec'ing my car in early 2015.

I'd choose the GLC. The Disco Sport has an incredibly econo-class interior and looks like the girl that likes to wear yoga pants but has never completed one squat in her life - it's ugly and so unsexy. I'd EASILY take an Evoque over the Disco Sport, space compromises and all.

Out of the three, I'd go with the Mercedes. Including the Lexus NX, Porsche Maccan, and Audi Q5 which are size similar would definitely have skewed the outcome.

I'm a guy. Driving any of these seems just plain girly. Have to step up one more size before you have my attention.

I am a FULL SIZED American Male - and I don't buy tiny little vehicles

Part of "Luxury" is having plenty of room - and these do not have enough. They are NOT luxury vehicles to begin with - YOU might call them "Premium" ones MAYBE.

Yes - they are "chick" vehicles (Are they "cars")

I'm sure the GLC AMG Sport is kinda slick for this vehicle size though.
