Insult To Injury? VW Diesel Owners Saddled With Emission Repairs BEFORE Warranty Expiration

Owners of some Volkswagen TDI models are experiencing premature selective catalyst reduction (SCR) failures because of AdBlue heaters that, in some cases, aren’t lasting more than 50,000 miles.

According to a source who spoke to TTAC under the condition of anonymity, many Volkswagen TDI owners are arriving at dealerships after seeing check engine lights for failing AdBlue (diesel emissions fluid) heaters. Those heaters, explained the source, fail “based more on time than mileage” and cost over $1,000 to replace.

VW Sucks - however, how is this issue different than customers being stuck for $1,000's in DSG transmission repairs at 50,000 miles or the 2.0T engines that blow at 60,000 miles because of oil sludge?

When you buy a VW-group (Audi/Porsche/Bentley) product you are basically playing Russian roulette with repairs outside of warranty.

Want to hear a shocker? The warranty on ALL Bentley's is 3 years, unlimited mileage. Audi warranty is 4 yrs / 48K miles, VW's is 3 yrs / 36K miles.

Bentleys apparently start self destructing in year 4 - air suspension is first to go (because they all weigh 6,000 lbs), followed by various electronic and sensor failures, followed by W-12 twin-turbo cooling/wear issues.

This is not a diesel issue, its a VW group issue.

Agreed. There were times when--for the sake of our customers--we covered repairs that VW wouldn't. The DSG is a very fragile transmission and the 2.0T is hit or miss for durability.

VW is VERY antagonistic to customers.

Audis are as bad, but because most of them are leases, they are reliable for the duration of the lease.

Actually, VW has paid for quite a few of these repairs, even for cars out of warranty. If the owner is told no, usually a call to Customer Care has changed things around. I think the diesel mess has made them a little more proactive taking care of their customers.

Think again! My 09 TDI has the infamous high pressure fuel pump failure that is rampant in our part of the country. I was refused any assistance with this 7000.00 repair from dealership to corporate. Now I can only get the "goodwill assistance" package if I bring the vehicle in to the dealership. I just had it towed out 3 months ago. Hmmm! When asked what my options were I was told to "Tow it back"! Customer assistance and goodwill... Seriously?

Gary, sorry you've had problems. I base what I wrote on what has been posted in the TDICLUB forums. There certainly has been some that were denied, but their seems to be a higher number of people that were taken care of. VW really should be consistent, and with their current problems you would think they'd be working hard to keep us as customers.

VW's ALWAYS have big ticket items for repair the nanosecond the car is out of warranty.

As a stopgap measure, VW should have put a 10 year 100K mile powertrain warranty on the affected TDIs.

The irony is that the Hyundai 10/100 warranty isn't needed on H/K vehicles, but it is needed on VW/Audi.

Mercedes has this same issue with DEF heaters. Ask me how i know. not to mention the oil cooler seals that the engine has to be removed to fix, costing over $2,000, along with almost $2,000 to replace the DEF heater.
