Only Purists Need Apply: Audi's 911 Killing 2016 TT RS Caught Testing With Manual Transmission

Development of Audi's hotter TT RS continues at pace and fresh shots from Sweden have allowed us a peek inside a winter test mule. Intriguingly, this particular car’s fitted with a manual gearbox, suggesting the production RS won’t necessarily be a DSG-only affair.

The yellow bodywork and badging’s no different from a TTS like CAR’s long-termer, but there are some telltale giveaways – not least the much larger, oval exhaust outlets (an Audi RS model hallmark), housed within an RS3-style diffuser section

Killing? Not so much. I see 1 TT(RS or other) for every 100 Porsches. So needless to say the last TT I saw on the street was circa 2000.

Can you imagine telling your buddies "I sold my 911 Porsche for an Audi TT because its a better car."...didn't think so, me neither.

I own an Audi, so readers, please don’t mistake what I say as an anti-Audi rant.

The Porsche 911 is an icon. It, and its predecessors, have been for decades. This state has persisted in spite of some people arguing it hasn’t been sufficiently updated, or that it had undesirable handling characteristics (e.g., oversteer). I has been an icon for a long time.

The 911’s popularity isn’t due it it’s numbers. There are faster cars. There are quicker cars. There are cars that do the ‘Ring in much less time. And yet, it remains an icon. It remains the car that others compare themselves to. That’s because whatever the 911 *actually* is, I believe it’s at least a winning combination of a number of elements that have made it successfully withstand the test of time, and make it a highly desired and highly respected item, be that daily drive, track car, or garage trophy.

The Audi TT, as good as it is, and solid as its numbers may be, is simply not that sort of icon. I’m pretty sure that the 911’s fans aren’t there because of numbers, and they won’t leave because someone else has better numbers.

Nonetheless, congrats to Audi for continuously improving the TT, and for making it a notable performer!

The beauty of Porsches for me at least is that every aspect of the car (steering, handling, braking, engine, transmission, sound, etc) is driver oriented and seamlessly integrated with each other. Few cars get every aspect and system to work together so smoothly. BMW's use to but have lost their way.

LOL. The R8 hasn't even killed the 911, yet. TTRS, really?

I died laughing at the ridiculous notion of Audi Golf bettering a 911 and this is from someone who HATES the 911.

Just because it shows up in a test mule does not mean it will make it to your market or even into production as a whole.
