Marchionne Envisions Alfa Romeo Returning To Formula 1 With Cooperation Of Ferrari

Ferrari chairman Marchionne has long held an ambition to get Alfa Romeo back to F1, and now has suggested it will be with its own team, in partnership with the Prancing Horse.

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport on Friday about the frenzy caused by comments he made before Christmas about Alfa Romeo in F1, Marchionne said: "What frenzy? In order to restore their name they must consider returning to Formula 1. They would probably work with Ferrari."

These comments by Sergio are but vocal slight of hand to distract you from the fact that Alfa Romeo cannot introduce its new Giulia as planned because it didn't pass the collision tests. FCA is bleeding cash and would no more likely be able to afford another F1 team as I would be able to win Le Mans this year.

Think smaller like a few million instead of a few hundred million

So, Haas F1 will become Haas Alfa Romeo . . .

This way, instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars/euros/baby tears, they cut a multi-year sponsorship deal for a few tens of millions.

Of course, Haas will have to demonstrate they are "worthy" by consistently placing better than mid-pack.

p.s.
This is more pressure on you Mr. Guiterrez

So Sergio wants to throw money down to take Alfa racing in F1 that has literally zero connection to the street by a brand that is sucking down engineering dollars all while the Dart and 200 are market failures, Jeeps are delayed, and Maserati is languishing. Sounds like a logical plan to me.

Better plan: Market Dodge, Chrysler, and Fiat models as the FCA brand. Kill Lancia. Decide which to save Alfa or Maserati and then cut a platform sharing deal with Hyundai to use the modern Genesis platform rather than the supposedly all new Giorgio platform that is a cut down Ghibli which itself is a 300 with a revised front suspension which itself is a discontinued Mercedes platform,

F1 has numerous past, present and future connections to the "street"

@MorePower You're an idiot. The ONLY connection to F1 and the street is that both vehicles have four wheels and an engine.

No Mr. Darringer, you are delusional.

Almost every car today has a form of variable valve timing. Variable valve timing was first introduced in a F1 car by Honda and has been copied by every manufacturer.

Ms. Darringer is more than just delusional, he is a friken pyscopath as noted by his continual unbridled attacks on everyone on this forum. Given the idiocracy of his comments I not sure that he isn't a ward of the state and not even in the auto industry.

@Terry989

He/she has a right to their opinion. Everyone here feels strongly about their automotive beliefs.

Actually - while F1 has almost gone off the grid in the USA - it is still a big deal in Europe - which is about the only place that the Alpha has a chance of selling. In reality - this is Advertising money - and they would spend it on TV ads - which are no longer as effective because of the fragmented TV network market. However - JUST what is Alpha going to contribute to the effort. If the car is independently made - and the engine is a Ferrari - all they are is an added sponsor - hardly worth millions. Now - if they could produce an Alpha that would compete at LeMans - and it won - they would have something - but that is VERY unlikely.

It's Alfa not Alpha...

Seriously??!!!!! Is this the way to keep Alfa Romeo surviving??

Sad to read but what is needed is for the Management to stick to their plan, roll out the long awaited SUV that we heard about even before Bentley's Bentayga and Jaguar F-Pace and they are both out in the market already!! Jaguar entered F1 and sales were not that good but exited soon after and now... new models are popping like mushrooms.. F type / F pace / XE / we even hear E pace is on the way....all in very short period of time..

It's even more amazing that both aforementioned brands are also on their way to producing new baby SUV... soon... Maybe it's marketing strategy that is lacking for Alfa ... we don't see enough prototypes photos nor news on many car websites... I always read the next panamera, the next Cayenne, the next X5, the next ...... but hardly or rarely the next Alfa...

I am a big car fan and in my opinion, only 2 ways for this brand to survive: either sell it to BMW or stick to the strategy put in place and start rolling the dice otherwise and sad to say... the fate of Alfa will be the same as Lancia, forgotten with the time...
