Agent 001 UNCOVERS More And MORE Of The All-New BMW X4 M40i At The SUV's Launch
While BMW has provided high-end consumers with the lustful X5M and X6M, the lower-tier X3 and X4 have been pretty much M less. Well, that is until now.

That's because the Bavarians have decided to bring to market an all-new offering that hasn't been done previously. Starting with the coupe-like X4, BMW has decided to launch an M Performance model.

BMW X4 M40i

To be clear, this is NOT an actual M vehicle. It falls into the M Performance lineup that's known for having cars abroad like the tri-turbo diesel M550d. Think of M Performance as M lite. Although you will not get the whole kit and caboodle that's found in a real M GmbH product, you do get more power and some other performance-based modifications to make it worth the time of day.

This is where the X4 M40i steps into the picture. Think of it as a hotter X4 that's been given some M badging. As of now we have not been privy to know about any potential X3M or X4M are coming down the 'pike, so, consider this the closest thing to that for the time being.

Having said that, scope out what Agent 001 captured when he spent time with the all-new M Performance vehicle this week. He made sure to snap it inside and out to give you the best look at it yet.

With the extension and dilution of once premium performance icons like "M" and "AMG" down market to draw in a broader audience they
will loose their exclusivity and luster. Its putting short term revenue enhancement above long term brand values. The high end buyers who spend big bucks and generate big profits for the manufacturers have to be saying WTF when they see more "M" and "AMG" badging on soccer moms SUV's at stop lights. An M5 has/had real meaning in car enthusiast circles. What the heck does X4M40i stand for ? Putting lipstick on a pig perhaps.

I agree that it's lipstick on a pig. Like the X6 I don't "get" the X4. While I like power in a vehicle, I don't "get" wanting an SUV/crossover to be a track star.

Simple answer. Everyone is trying to figure out an answer to Evoque.

I seriously doubt BMW or Mercedes give it a second thought.

How many Evoque's does LR sell? In NYC and the Hamptons, I don't see many Evoque's at all. Lots of Range Rover Sports (the $80K version), but Evoque's..Nope!

@runbuh you missed the point entirely. I said nothing against power and handling. All cars should have good power and handling that is appropriate to their mission. What I don't get is someone wanting to hustle a crossover around like it's a Stingray or something. To me that makes ZERO sense.

moron alert @runbuh you just proved my point...the "M" versions are utterly pointless, but hey, I know overcompensatory old men will buy these in droves. This is just BMW selling itself like a cheap prostitute and you're the John who thinks the trash is gorgeous.

BMW "M" at this point, is basically a trim package.

BMW de-contents its vehicles so much now, that (aside from spending the coin on a real M3/4/5) you basically have to step up to an "M-Sport" if you want your BMW to not look like it belongs on a rental car lot. You can buy a $6,000 M-Sport package on all BMW's - this X4 just happens to come with a bigger engine (which is baked into the higher price).
